Souvenir from Cambodia

Post by chloee.konsam »

Hi all

There may already be a topic under other forums. But please bear with me.
I am new in Cambodia and I am only here for 4 months. I am looking for souvenirs (as gifts) to take back home to Canada. As of now, I am thinking of Mondulkiri Coffee or Kampot Pepper. Do you think the Mondulkiri Coffee is really good?

I am looking for suggestions of any kind of souvenir. Really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Some is good. I would suggest you find a roaster, you can smell them, the locate the shop. Try it and buy at the last minute before departure.
Mostly the supermarket stuff is stale.

Nice silks can be found at russian market.

Learn which styles are real Khmer as you will see a lot of Thai stuff and synthetic blends.

The Sampot Hol is very worthwhile.
Decent pieces start at $70 and go up from there.

Less questions by Customs/Immigration on return to Canada if the souvenirs you bring back are not food items. Especially coming from Cambodia.

I brought coffee and pepper to Australia multiple times with no issues. Declared it.

Cambodian palm sugar.
You can buy it in small round cakes at most markets.
Some supermarkets and NGO's have them individually wrapped.
Slightly caramel taste.
Perfect to go with your cCambodian coffee
and the Sugar Palm, of course, is Cambodia's national tree.

(or maybe a green hammock? not made here
but it is a defining national symbol)

No #1
a Krama
- in the traditional small check.
Takes an unmistakable stamp of Cambodia to wherever you are in the world.

Yes, you are right but right now many countries are on edge about spread of animal diseases, especially swine fever. I just did 2 roundtrips in the last month and intense questioning and bag checks when any mention of being in SEA or China. Cambodia is on the list. Over the last 20 years never had my bag checked for agriculture or food products before now. Similar to when SARS was a big issue and I was traveling from living in Guangzhou.

As states, probably not a problem but as others have suggested take a krama, clothing, or non-food item and it may make things easier on arrival.
