Eradicating Rabies From Cambodia

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

This welcome news was posted on social media yesterday. Rabies is a real problem in Cambodia and it kills people.
Dear SIem Reap community ,

FYI '🇰🇭🐾🙏❤️

'Mission Rabies UK' is currently undertaking thousands of free rabies vaccines for animals in PP during a two week medical outreach stint . Animals that have been vaccinated will be marked with a red dot on their forehead. They are focusing on dogs mainly. From street to pagoda to privately owned!

In January 2020 Mission Rabies UK is planning to come to Siem Reap to do around 5000 vaccines and some spay and neuter .

Ouk Hok Sy Veterinary now renamed 'Wat Damnak Veterinary;' is proudly supporting this mission and collaborating .

This mission was kicked off by a previous volunteer vet to SR Dr Olivia Pozzan from OZ who was put in connection with Cambodia through former resident mobile vet nurse to SR Jessi Leigh which many long term expats here might still remember.

We are very lucky that 'Mission Rabies UK is now offering their help to Cambodia where thousands of people die each year of this totally preventive killer disease.Once you have rabies there is no return .

Pls help us and spread the word in the local community to bring their animals out to the road when the time is ripe .

There will be many teams on the ground who will systematically go through this town to vaccinate and record areas and animals ! We must cover about 80 % of the furry population everywhere in order to reach target number and make it effective . As the next step there are plans to venture into the countryside and other parts of Cambodia . PP and SR are the pilot projects !

'Mission Rabies Uk' is already working in Thailand, Sri Lanka ,India, Myanmar amongst other .You can follow them on the link below !

https://www.facebook.com/MissionRabies/

Together we have a dream !

To eradicate rabies from the Kingdom of Wonder !!

Please dream it with us and make it happen!

Orkun and vaccinate your animals pls if needed beforehand .

It is really important in Cambodia as I have seen rabies in this town myself before more than once in my 8 years of working with animals 🐾🇰🇭🙏

Good luck to these dedicated volunteers.

The people of Siem Reap City might care about their dogs like family.

Those in the provinces do not. Dogs are seen as a barking gatekeeper, trash disposal, source of income (bartering puppies). Not as family pets.

We had a crazy dog in the village a few weeks ago. It bit a six month old and ran off into the rubber forest.

Rabies still is a main problem in Cambodia, and even though the action in Siem Reap deserves respect, more is needed to make a difference than just 'World Rabies day' with a few free shots.

Local healthcenters have realized rabies is serious (business) too, a shot has gone up from 40k riels to 100k riels.

UPDATE

Mission Rabies to hold mass 10-day Cambodian vaccination drive
Vet-led project – part of international charity Worldwide Veterinary Service, which has just merged with Dogs Trust – hopes to vaccinate 100,000 dogs in capital Phnom Penh against rabies.
Paul Imrie May 11, 2023
Vet-led welfare project Mission Rabies is preparing for its biggest challenge yet – to vaccinate 100,000 Cambodian dogs in 10 days.

The project – part of Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), which has just merged with Dogs Trust – will carry out Cambodia’s largest ever mass vaccination drive in capital Phnom Penh.

Mission Rabies will work with local government, charity partners, and 100 international volunteers to reach the target and protect an estimated two million people living in the capital from the deadly disease.

High death rate
Rabies kills around 59,000 people a year and Cambodia has one of the highest death rates per capita of any country.

Dog bites remain the main cause of rabies in people, while mass canine vaccination programmes are the most effective way to control the disease.

Mission Rabies is aiming to vaccinate 70% of the world’s dog population, the level needed to eliminate the disease in dogs and prevent deaths in humans.
‘This has to stop’

Luke Gamble, chief executive of Mission Rabies and WVS, said: “In Cambodia, the reality of rabies is a tragic one. Statistically, children die of canine transmitted rabies every week in Phnom Penh, and annually, approximately 600,000 people in the country are bitten by dogs.

Cambodia chases herd immunity in dogs to stamp out rabies
A British charity is leading a drive to vaccinate 100,000 dogs in just 10 days, to break the cycle of transmission in the rabies hotspot
By Sarah Newey, Global Health Security Correspondent, in Bangkok 22 May 2023 • 10:48am

A British charity has launched a “focused blast” to give 100,000 dogs rabies shots in just 10 days in Cambodia’s capital city, in the country’s largest ever animal vaccination drive.

The southeast Asian country is a hotspot for the ancient disease, which is transmitted via the saliva of an infected animal and causes fatal inflammation of the brain if it is not treated immediately.

While surveillance is patchy, it is estimated that there are around 800 cases in Cambodia each year, giving the small country one of the world’s highest incidence rates.

The vast majority of cases affect children, partly because they often don’t tell anyone they’ve been bitten. Once symptoms develop, it’s nearly always too late to prevent a death.

In an attempt to break the cycle of transmission, Mission Rabies - a UK-based offshoot of the Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) and the Dogs Trust - on Monday launched a 10-day drive to vaccinate 70 per cent of dogs in Phnom Penh, alongside the national government.
The team mark dogs once they've been vaccinated, to avoid double shots

Using 100,000 donated doses of rabies shots, hundreds of Cambodian and international volunteers will round up and inoculate dogs across the city in the country’s capital, which is home to roughly two million people.

“We’re undertaking our largest and most ambitious vaccination drive yet,” said Dr Luke Gamble, founder and CEO of Mission Rabies and WVS.

“What we are trying to do is skew the probability, so that if a rabid dog comes into an area, we want to up the stakes that it will bite another dog that is already vaccinated - stopping the chain of transmission,” told the Telegraph. “We’re trying to get herd immunity.”

He added that vaccinating animals is one of the most effective ways of wiping out rabies, and the inoculation drive is based on similar programmes in India and Malawi.

It is hoped the £250,000 project in Phnom Penh will be replicated across Cambodia if it proves successful. Surveillance teams will track the impacts after the vaccinations conclude.
