Kingdom’s air passenger traffic grows 12 percent
Passenger traffic at Cambodian airports grew by 12 percent in the first eleven months of this year because of new air routes and new airlines being put into operation.
Figures from Cambodia Airports, which manages the country’s three international airports, show that from January to November, passengers amounted to 10.6 million people.
Phnom Penh International Airport and Sihanoukville International Airport saw the biggest traffic growth, while Siem Reap International Airport experienced a decline in traffic.
Siem Reap International Airport, on the other hand, saw passenger traffic fall 11 percent, to 3.5 million.
“For Phnom Penh international Airport, the growth is driven by new airlines and routes,” said Khek Norinda, communications and public relations director at Cambodia Airports, citing the carrier Citylink’s new route between Jakarta and Phnom Penh and also Chinese carriers.

Air Asia to Establish Cambodia Air Asia
AirAsia, the Malaysia-based low-cost airline aims to establish Cambodia Air Asia in the Kingdom of Cambodia, says AirAsia’s Group President Bo Lingam.
Minister of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) Mao Havanall, welcomed the move. He said that Cambodia has full peace, stability, economic growth and is ranked the number 3 for having a good investment environment in Asia for foreign investors.
This is the second time that AirAsia has declared an interest I creating an AirAsia Cambodia. In May 2017, the continent’s largest budget airline, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, wanted to open a subsidiary company in Cambodia to handle an anticipated increase in the number of passengers travelling to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville from Malaysia.
The purpose of forming AirAsia Cambodia was brought up by AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes in his meeting with Prime Minister HE at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Asean in May 2017.

Does this mean they can then fly direct to many destinations rather than have to route through KL?Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 12:51 pm

Re: Aviation News
Basically yes but of course as Hillbilly said, it largely depends on demand. But flights to long distance destinations, like Australia, won't happen as those are operated by different entity always and surely it would take very long until there is enough demand for those from/to Cambodia.Doc67 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 1:13 pmDoes this mean they can then fly direct to many destinations rather than have to route through KL?Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 12:51 pm

Strong rumours for long time already have said that the possible main hub for AirAsia would be Sihanoukville. I'm sure AirAsia want's to have share of the SEA-China market and thus Sihanoukville would be pretty ideal location. A) There is already demand in that area, B) convenient distance to operate A320 planes to/from major cities in China, C) from Sihanoukville it's pretty easy to continue to KL, SG and other destinations within SEA and, D) and maybe most important is the strong relationship with China and Cambodia so it probably would be easier to get slots from China for their flights through Cambodian AirAsia.
But who would be the local partner for AirAsia? Does Royal Group have the money? Some Chinese investor?
Re: Aviation News
Yes, of course. And as probably the cheapest way from PP to Australia is already via Air Asia via KL, I don't suppose they want to create their own demand from their existing demand.Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 1:41 pmI'd imagine it largely depends on demand.Doc67 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 1:13 pmDoes this mean they can then fly direct to many destinations rather than have to route through KL?Kung-fu Hillbilly wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 12:51 pm

Foreign, local carriers make bids for Malaysia Airlines: Report
Air France-KLM, Japan Airlines and AirAsia are among the carriers interested in buying a stake in Malaysia Airlines.
Proposals to invest in ailing Malaysia Airlines include one from Air France-KLM which wants as much as 49 percent while Japan Airlines is looking at a 25 percent stake, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters news agency.
Domestic carrier AirAsia Group Berhad and Malindo Air, the Malaysian arm of Indonesia's Lion Air, have also submitted proposals, the sources said.
"The bids from the foreign carriers are more comprehensive and strategic as both plan to capitalise on the strategic location of Malaysia for their operations," said one of the sources.
The Malaysian government has been seeking a strategic partner for its national airline, which has struggled to recover from two tragedies - the mysterious disappearance of flight MH370 and the shooting down of flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine - in 2014.
