Battambang pool breaks ground
15 August 2019
A groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the first international-standard Swimming Centre in Battambang took place yesterday with Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng overseeing proceedings at the campus of the University of Battambang.

The project is built on an area of 112m by 65m and will take two years to complete. Approximately $2 million has been set aside for the project, reported the Khmer Swimming Federation.

Hem Kiry, secretary-general of the Khmer Federation of Swimming, said that the swimming pool would be built to international standards enabling national and international athletes to practice, while also promoting swimming for health among the public.

“Especially the big goal is to increase the ability of [our] athletes before the 32nd SEA Games in 2023,” he said.

Cambodia currently has a handful of international-standard swimming pools: the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex, the Techo Sen Swimming Center at the Kampong Cham Provincial Centre, and the Swimming Center at the Olympic Stadium which is currently being restored and rebuilt.
