Social Budaya visa is one often used which is a 6 month visa requiring an Indonesian sponsor (anyone will do), leave the country every six months to renew (Singapore same day turn around ). I know people who have used this visa back to back for decades. Retirement visa for over 55 is pretty straight forward and is valid for a year. Jesus, It was only a couple of years ago I'd send my passport to immigration with a fixer and I'd be stamped in and out the country without leaving the bar. Indonesia is still "flexible" in many ways.

It has changed considerably since then, that party lifestyle is long gone as are the drunken hordes. Just returned from a week in Laos, I quite like the people and food and am always impressed by the women there. I have lived and!/or worked in S. Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand over the last 20 years..Plus I have visited Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos and Singapore. Frankly the E. Asian thrill is gone. and. kids are almost out of the nest. As I have made clear in previous posts my time is running out. It's time to learn a new language so.... Ecuador, Chile, Columbia,, Mexico or Guatemala are calling. I doubt my Khmer wife could ever leave her home village and frankly she is the sole reason I've stayed here. I would miss her tremendously, but if I go, my love for her will follow me forever. Nonetheless I am not an E. Asian kind of guy. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't.
By the way I found Penang boring, but it had the best street food I've ever eaten.

2012 was the last year that Vang Vieng was a party town, went in 2013 the town was closed down at 10 pm... an lots of Koreans and Japanese. I’ll move to the Philippines next year I’ve always been happiest there. I speak near fluent Tagalog and people respect me there. In Cambodia and Thailand the women just want money.

Hi Doc67. The last time I was there was 1
week before the troubles in PP in 1996. It was the most boring country I ever visited. Admittedly I was only in Vientiane and my info is quite dated. There was no real bar scene in fact prosties would only approach a
potential client by riding pillion on a moto, assumably driven by their pimp. There was really nothing to do. Also it was illegal for a foreigner to have sex with a local girl. I hope much has changed, so give it a shot and post your experiences. One redeeming factor-Beer Laos.

"Actually, I also like Laos a lot so I was just half-jokingly discouraging others. I have travelled there on occasion since 1997 and was in Pakse for 10 days last year. Lived in Vientiane for a year in 2008 - 09 and then 4 years from 2011 to 2015. Love the food (well, stuff like ping gai, khao neo, larp moo, dtam mak hoong, dtam mak dang, sai gork, ping pa, ping pa dook, nam tok moo...), the Mekong sunsets, the chill but international scene in the capital (French, Italian, Korean, Indian, Singaporean, etc. in addition to the usual UK, USA, Aus, NZ people). Travel within Laos is difficult but well worth it. The Lao are generally very nice people and the language is fun to learn and easy to speak."
