My experience has been that if you buy booze and cigarettes in PP before you leave, you can have hours of fun (well, slight exaggeration perhaps ) cruising the duty-free shops and laughing at their ludicris prices. WTF $22 for a carton of Malboro, $20 for Bombay gin etc
Even if you are a non-smoker - if you get a carton of cigs for someone in Oz it's like a $100 present and they will

into oz now there is a special lane for taxing smokes- you are only allowed 50 cigarettes- yes, thats right 50.
it is a giant revenue source with 25 marlboros at over $27- yep.
and lest anyone be tempted to lend any credence to our crowing and cackling friend- you had better declare ANY food you bring in as they will fine the living shit out of you simply for not declaring it. NZ too- for good and reasonable quarantine reasons.
and yes, they screen now for pharmaceutical drugs esp ED and hypnotics/ tranks.
they want to see an oz script.

Wow, thanks for the heads up about that one. I was planning on taking 2 cartons (400 cigs) with me and claiming 1 as mine and the other belongs to Mrs UT.frank lee bent wrote:into oz now there is a special lane for taxing smokes- you are only allowed 50 cigarettes- yes, thats right 50.

But, wait, check out the math on a simple packet of Ara @ 1500 riel.
I packet of Ara = 20 cigs
1500 riel = about $0.37 USD or roughly $0.45 AUD (that's for one packet).
The customs duty payable is $0.46268 per cigarette. ($0.46268 X 20 cigs = $9.25 AUD)
But wait, there's more. GST @ 10% of the duty plus the original price, add another $0.97 AUD
The breakdown:
1 pkt Ara = 0.45 AUD
Customs duty = $9.25 AUD
GST = $0.97
TOTAL for 1 pkt Ara = $10.67 AUD!!! (One carton of Ara = $106.70 AUD)

Or maybe they're just jealous of the prices we pay.

Yes it's still cheaper. I haven't smoked for a number of years but I sure as hell wouldn't ever smoke in Australia again. There are much cheaper, more enjoyable ways to kill yourself.General Chatter wrote:so is it cheaper to take them and pay the taxes or not?Username Taken wrote:Wow, thanks for the heads up about that one.
