Re: Nuon Chea dead at 93
The ultimate ideologue - not a shred of humanity in the man.
I place him as Brother No 1 most responsible for the horrors.
He made sure, personally and with absolute conviction, that not one scrap of human consideration came into play when setting up the "workers paradise".
And it was his paranoia about the purity of the revolution that was probably the main driver in the never ending inner-cleansings, purges and torture forced "confessions" that caused the KR to devour itself.
A secrecy freak of the highest order - watching everything, taking everything in, but absolutely nothing, zip zero, signalling out from those cold dead eyes.
Unlike all the others - not even a tiny tinge of regret or admitting to any mistakes at all.
Even if he had lived out his 3 life sentences of quiet reflection in a solitary cell - it would not have produced an inch of shift in this blokes thinking.
I spent many, far too many, days in that courtroom, trying to understand inside these guys. (It damaged my soul forever.)
I learned a lot about the others, but my impression of Nuon Chea was exactly the same as on day one -
he was a cold-blooded reptilian crocodile. Nothing more.

Re: Nuon Chea dead at 93
This man and many more of his henchmen should have been executed for crimes against humanity and his family properties confiscated demolished and something like a children's hospital built on the site. Instead his family live in an opulent villa no doubt paid for by his victims confiscated wealth.
Burn in hell and be reborn as something terrible. He has had a full life of 93 years a murderer of men, women and children.

They don't live in luxury, they have a very ordinary wooden house in Pailin.paul.smith wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 7:41 am Instead his family live in an opulent villa no doubt paid for by his victims confiscated wealth.

Yeah, I got that wrong brother number 3 I was reading about. No matter they should never have been allowed to live out their lives in peace.

Still too much of a luxury for the guy.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Re: Nuon Chea dead at 93
A remorseless perpetrator of genocide
By George Wright, BBC News
While for most, Pol Pot is the name synonymous with the deaths of around two million Cambodians in the 1970s, Nuon Chea was just as important a cog in the Khmer Rouge's genocidal machine.
Defiant until the end, the regime's Brother Number Two refused to ever accept responsibility or show genuine remorse for the crimes committed on his watch.
"If we did not kill the internal traitors in our party, if we did not smash the enemy, there would be no Cambodia today," he once told a journalist.
Indicative of the paranoid nature of the regime, Nuon Chea blamed the majority of the killings on rebellious factions within the ranks of the Khmer Rouge who defied orders, although little credible evidence of this has ever been presented.
Nuon Chea saw himself as a patriot and a man of conviction. But history will remember him as a ruthless leader who oversaw the deaths of around a quarter of his own people in some of the worst crimes of the 20th Century.
George spent three years reporting on the Khmer Rouge tribunal.

Cambodia: Senior Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea dies at 93
Known as 'Brother Number Two', Nuon Chea was convicted of genocide by a UN-backed court last year.

Khmer Rouge's "Brother Number Two", Nuon Chea, has died aged 93, according to a spokesman for the Cambodia tribunal where he was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity.
"We can confirm that defendant Nuon Chea... passed away this evening on 4 August, 2019, at Khmer Soviet Friendship hospital," Neth Pheaktra, a spokesman for the court, said on Sunday.
The cause of his death was not given, but he had been in the hospital since early July.
Nuon Chea's wife Ly Kim Seng told AFP news agency that she was by his side until the "last breath", and that his body would be taken to Cambodia's Pailin province for the funeral.
The Khmer Rouge's rule, led by "Brother Number One", Pol Pot, left some two million Cambodians dead from overwork, starvation and mass executions from 1975 to 1979.
But Nuon Chea, considered the Khmer Rouge's chief ideologue, was not arrested until 2007.
He and other senior members of the ultra-Maoist group were put on trial at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.
The United Nations-backed court sentenced him to life in prison last year after he was found guilty of genocide against the ethnic Vietnamese and Cham Muslim minority group.
His lawyers had informed the court that Nuon Chea would appeal, but prosecutors are now expected to ask the Supreme Court chamber to terminate his case following his death, according to a court official.

Re: Nuon Chea dead at 93
There are very few people who really deserve to burn in hell for all eternity, but this cold blooded bastard is surely one of them. There's a great film called "Enemy of the People" that tells his sordid story. If you want to know truth about the Khmer Rouge it's a must see. If you have the stomach for it. It's available on YouTube last time I looked. After watching the film there's only one conclusion that is possible. This SOB was the driving force behind the genocide of the Khmer Rouge!
