Re: Cambodians asking personal questions
Last year I was waiting in the queue at the Kiwi mart and I could tell the Cambodian chap next to me wanted to make conversation. His "icebreaker"- he pointed at the condom rack and said "you like?".
I made a pained expression and pointed at the "Big-boys" and said "oh very difficult- I must use this one".
The look of awe was priceless, "oh really....REALLY SIR?"

I was in one of those mini-marts once, and two youngish single girls were talking about the condoms. I thought of things to say, but decided not to. I erred on the side of not being offensive.
## I thought I knew all the answers, but they changed all the questions. ##

I love this, I can just imagine the reaction. Whenever a tuk tuk driver jokes about going home with me, I just hold up my little finger and shake my head. It always gets a laugh from his friends.bittermelon wrote:Last year I was waiting in the queue at the Kiwi mart and I could tell the Cambodian chap next to me wanted to make conversation. Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

Re: Cambodians asking personal questions
I’ve found this forward questioning to be common not just here but also in China, Korea, and Taiwan. It seems to be as much a part of asian culture as personal privacy is for us. I never take it personally because I just see it as a cultural difference. For them it’s as normal as it is for us to expect people not to pry. But I’m here to learn about a different culture, so I indulge as long as it’s appropriate. I spent time in China and several times at public urinals other men would try to look at my dick without even being discreet about it. To them it was perfectly normal to satisfy their curiosity. I was as private as I could be and didn’t intentionally show them but I’m not going to get upset about it either. I’ve heard lots of “inappropriate” or invasive questions in the last year and they don’t bother me. I’m also very tall so that warrants much curiosity as it is.
