Re: Japanese Engineer, YUICHI HATAMURA, Busted at Golden Sorya Mall, Phnom Penh
UPDATE
Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: Sok Khembandith, an assistant and translator for KOICHI TAKUMA, president of the Japanese Association of Cambodia, on July 28, asked the media to correct information relating to a Japanese drug user suspect. The suspect is not Japanese, but South Korean, and such misinformation can ruin relations between Japan and Cambodia, and Japan's reputation in Cambodia.
At the moment of his arrest, the suspect told the police that he was a "Japanese man, Hatamura Yuichi, 38,". After receiving notice that a Japanese citizen was arrested, a representative of the Japanese embassy met the man directly. As a result, he found that the man was not a Japanese citizen and did not even speak Japanese.
According to Fuji TV or FNN, the FNN contacted the Cambodian police and confirmed the truth of the incident and found that the man had lied about his name and nationality when he was arrested. The man arrested was South Korean.
To prove the fact, the FNN has confirmed the suspect's passport. On the passport, there is the letter "Republic of Korea". The man came to Cambodia with a Korean passport called "KANG JU SUNG", and the photo on the passport was the same as the suspect.
When FNN interviewed a Cambodian police officer, it was clear that the man was arrested because he was acting suspiciously in Phnom Penh on the night of July 24, 2019. The man was arrested with two packets of methamphetamine and taken to the police station who then notified the Japanese embassy.
