Re: Thailand’s Unlikely Embrace of Cannabis.
Phew.
For those that do believe the myth about Thai sticks being dipped in opium -
I can assure you it is not true.
Anybody that had intimate knowledge of this unique and especially fine pot will also tell you that.
It was a rumour that started at the time when Thai first appeared in the West in quantity, ie, early 70's
- it was born of a conflation of 3 unrelated factors
i/pot that was stronger than anything most people had smoked before
ii/ the fact that opium came from the same region
ii/ throw in a bit of romantic oriental mystery to the story
Funny to surf the web on this topic now - the only people saying this are the young stoner obsessives,
Endlessly repeating this myth as Fact - often word for word, cut and pasted, and with absolutely no foundation.
One response i found on a stoner forum sums it really well -- (first the myth, then the accurate response-)
Thai Stick is made by taking marijuana buds and dipping them in a solution of about 10% opium. The resulting buds are washed in the solution and then tied together on a stick and hung to dry - hence "stick" in the name
Thai sticks are not ganja sticks dipped in opium, it was just good quality, well grown, harvested right Thai ganja (before many of the strains there were polluted with imported faster finishing genes and the quality dropped with mass production) that was formed and rolled into sticks tied with hemp string or cotton. There's lots of misinformed nonsense floating around about cannabis...the Thai stick dipped in opium fairy tale is just one of them..next time you hear that nonsense or other ask them if they have ever had circa 70's Thai stick in their hand and smoked it...or are they just repeating something they read online?
and there is the fact that ganja and opium do not go well together...opium costs alot more than ganja etc etc
the fact was that most Thai stick was simply well grown, potent tropical ganja that was packaged uniquely.....this was stronger than the other grass for sale at the time and then the legend grew, it was quoted wrong and re-told.
Yep, Opium won't burn like weed, it'll run like oil or sticky sugar syrup, it'd come right through the paper if you rolled it in a joint or would hiss and spit if you put it in a bowl.
You don't smoke opium exactly, you boil it off of a metal surface, like chasing the dragon, so that's definitely a myth,. Apart from anything else, it'd cost twice as much if you were to opium dip it
However, I do give credence to Phuket Richard when he mentioned recently that opium was sometimes mixed in with Nepalese hash. That is not a myth according to those i trust on the subject.

Never would you put it on foil and put ur lighter under the foil as it would make it less potent, You need use a long pipe....You don't smoke opium exactly, you boil it off of a metal surface, like chasing the dragon, so that's definitely a myth,. Apart from anything else, it'd cost twice as much if you were to opium dip it
" A opium pipe is a lengthy tube with a basin at the end, the opium is placed inside the basin, this where it is broiled, then people will inhale the smoke"
i was lucky in my early travels and actually visited a few Opium dens in Northern Thailand & laos and brought some in Afghanistan in the mid 70's on my trips to buy carpets.
When i was dong business out of Calcutta in the late 80's we would stay at the great old Fairlawn hotel for a week sometimes, smoking opium an living on banana lasi's

So do you smoke it in a similar way that you would smoke weed- but with a bit of "coaxing"? Or is there much more to it? I seem to remember something about a coal (charcoal i guess) being used.

you roll it into a small ball, place the ball in the basin, heat - remove the heat and draw in the smoke, preferably while laying down

Kubla Khan
BY SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is another fabulist opium poem penned by the same poet.

The hospital received its first batch of 100 CBD bottles from the Food and Drug Administration in June. More bottles were then prepared from police-seized marijuana, which was then sent to a hospital facility...
It was 2 o’clock in the morning when Philippe Gobert hopped on his scooter. He left his place in the capital’s Pinklao area and rode northeast over 150 kilometers to the lesser-known province of Prachinburi. There, the French national; clad in a white robe beneath a faded red hoodie, Buddha amulet and visible sak yant chest tattoos; arrived by 6am to join dozens of people hopefully waiting for the chance to return home with cannabis medication from the first clinic to make it available in all of Asia.
Gobert said he contacted the hospital in advance. While a foreign-issued medical certificate would not be valid in Thailand, the hospital has the authority to issue the paperwork needed to obtain a prescription for patients deemed eligible and in need.Another benefit to the clinic, Gobert said, was that instead of getting weed illegally – which has no guarantee of quality – he can put his trust in the higher standards and quality offered by the clinic.
“We used to pick a young shoot of marijuana plant to eat with chili dipping sauce or, sometimes, we put a few leaves into a curry,” Supaporn said. “Thai people in the past knew their way around the herb quite well: How to use it and the right quantity to avoid harmful effects.”
At the back of the hospital, dozens of marijuana plants are growing inside shipping containers in controlled environments – hydroponics and aeroponics – with help from local farmers in the nearby Ban Dong Bang community. In the future, with more partnerships, the hospital plans to build a greenhouse where more plants are cultivated and produced at a higher capacity.
