Australian motorcycle gangs expanding into south-east Asia to get slice of drug market

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Casinos, in particular, are used as money laundering ventures. As of January 2019, there were 230 licensed casinos in south-east Asia. Of those, 150 were in Cambodia – compared with only 57 in 2014.

"Australian outlaw motorcycle gangs have expanded into south-east Asia to take advantage of a booming, multibillion-dollar methamphetamine export market in the region, a landmark report from the United Nations has warned."

"The most detailed look yet into the drug market in the region, the report explains how criminal networks in the region use lightly regulated free-trade zones, lax border control, money laundering through casinos and corruption to traffic “unfathomable quantities” of “high-profit methamphetamine” into neighbouring countries including Australia."

"While some illicit trade crosses borders clandestinely along jungle tracks or unofficial seaports, most illegal commodities are transported along the same infrastructure as legitimate trade."

"“In the Mekong region, many casinos are located in areas characterised by poor governance and political instability, or in border regions with significant crime or armed insurgency problems, and they operate illegally or quasi-legally.”

Lol. Obviously they haven’t come across the Cambodian Rebels. They let anyone with a scooter in!

I doubt they’re involved in anything organized!

Lol again.
