Re: Hong Kong Protesters: Radical Elements Storm Parliament
South Africa 73rd out of 180 countries on the global corruption index. A kleptocracy run by the ANC. Botswana and Cape Verde rank higher on the Global democracy index.
Former South African President Jacob Zuma seems to have decided that given his dire circumstances, with his reputation in freefall and a corruption trial pending, an attack is his best form of defence. Over two days in mid-July in Johannesburg, he appeared before the Zondo Commission, which was launched by Zuma’s successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa, last year to investigate the rampant corruption—what is known in South Africa as “state capture”—during Zuma’s troubled presidency. State capture is shorthand for how Zuma allegedly allowed close private business interests to exercise undue influence at the highest levels of government, including over appointments and dismissals at state-owned enterprises and even within his own Cabinet.

laredo, I think you set your sights a little low. Africa has a population of 1.3 billion, South Africa has 57 million, South Africa makes up 4% of Africa's population, Africa is hardly a beacon of hope for democracy however you define it.

New report from Freshnews. Hong Kong citizens who have traveled to Taiwan are now being denied entry back to Hong Kong.
Will the PLA be unleashed into Hong Kong for a second Tainanmen Square?
Stay tuned.

Update from the South China Morning Post:
As it happened: more than two dozen arrests after chaotic day of protests in Hong Kong, as police are attacked with petrol bombs and tear gas is fired
24 August 2019
A 12th straight weekend of anti-government protests in Hong Kong took an ugly turn following an approved march in Kwun Tong. Demonstrators clashed with police and threw petrol bombs in Telford Plaza, a mixed-use complex in Kowloon Bay. Police fired tear gas outside Ngau Tau Kok Police Station after protesters threw projectiles at them. Trouble also broke out in Wong Tai Sin and Sham Shui Po. There were at least 28 arrests during police operations.
More than 1,000 people showed up in Kwun Tong, an industrial district, calling for the full withdrawal of the now-shelved extradition bill and demanding an explanation over a plan to set up "smart lamp posts" along roads. The devices measure traffic conditions, weather and other data, but critics say they infringe upon privacy. The march followed a plan in the morning to cripple transport links to the airport, but that protest action failed to take off because of low numbers.

This weekend
Protesters are targeting CCTV cameras. Symbolically this is huge.
It shows a consciousness, and rejection, of China's social controls.
Cutting down camera poles, with chainsaws.

The PRC will hose it down, they can't risk it spreading to the mainland especially when faced with the economic blowback from the trade war.
The decision to stop importing ag products from USA will create real hardship. Neither Russia or south America has the capacity to supply especially given the USD nominal trades.
If the strait of Hormuz is compromised, they will be in the shit for oil too. Casus belli already exists for the Yanks to interdict.
