Cambodian Activist Saved from Beating by Bystanders
Cambodian Opposition Activist Beaten Nearly to Death by Unidentified Assailants
By RFA - June 29, 2019
An activist and former elected official of the banned opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was beaten nearly to death in Cambodia’s Kampong Thom province by a group of unidentified men, who only spared him after bystanders intervened, he said Friday.
Four men approached Sun Thun early in the morning on Friday to inquire about purchasing a plot of his land and attacked him when he took them to the area to inspect it, he told RFA’s Khmer Service.
“They wanted to kill me,” said Sun Thun, adding that the men fled when passersby saw what was happening and called out for help.

Former CNRP official reports murder bid
Kampong Thom provincial police are investigating a complaint by a former CNRP official about a murder attempt by four unknown men who beat him up and stole his phone in Baray district on Friday.
Major General Ouk Kosal, provincial police chief, yesterday said that police received the complaint from Sun Thun, a Cambodian Independent Teachers Association member and former provincial councillor with the CNRP.
He said police went to check the scene of the alleged murder attempt in Baray commune’s Thnal Cheat village, but have not found any of the four men.
Ouk Chhayavy, CITA president, yesterday said the murder attempt on Mr Thun may be related to politics because he had previously faced discrimination and his activities were monitored by strangers.
She urged the authorities, especially the government, to investigate the case and arrest the perpetrators to be punished according to the law.
