Deep cycle battery or 2, charger, inverter and data pack for tethered phone will run fans and lights for a long time.

Load shedding power cuts seem to have ended now anyway. A $30 Prolink UPS might be all you need for any random cuts under an hour. All the computer shops sell them.

Mine died after 2 years but a replacement battery was only $15 and it was easy to replace.

I asked in the load shedding thread why they bothered to put an on/off switch on UPSs... but I soon realised if the power went out for four hours while I was out of the house, it was no point in having my wifi running when I wasn't here, so starting turning it off when I went out, so if I returned to no power I would still have a full charge.

Yeah, I would do that too. Shut them off before leaving the house for extended periods.

My oldest one is about 2 years old and I've noticed that it lasts about half as long as it used to.

I didn't know that you could get replacement batteries for them. I'll have to look into that. Did you get your replacement battery locally?

Davy Computer on 19, same place I bought the UPS. It's just an 8AH lead acid, so once you have drained it to zero on several occasions its life is probably seriously compromised. If I ever move to a little house on a little patch of land I'm going to install a small solar system with batteries.

You can also use a bigger scooter battery (same capacity) if you want, or if you want a lot more capacity, a battery for something like a Kia Visto is $40 ish and 5x the capacity. Will have to have the wiring rigged for car battery terminals and sit outside the case though.

I'm no expert on ISPs, but Metfone for me goes almost completely down after a while during a power outage. It works at a trickle, barely enough to browse a webpage.
Oh ok. I've never used metfone. I have smart and my wife and I have not experienced that.

I have. Power goes out and most locals lose their cable/fibre so switch to 4G instead, which then gets crippled by the extra demand.

Well that's good news to the OP, if you have smart anyhow. The OP has a 66.66% chance of having no issues with smart and a 33.33% chance of having an issue, according to the current poll. That's a whole lot better than a 100% failure.
