Expat tipoff?

Discussions about restaurants, cafes, coffee shops or bars in Cambodia. Feel free to write any reviews you have, whether its the best burger you've had in Phnom Penh or the worse pizza in Kampot, we want to read it! Discussions about Khmer dishes are also in here, or you can leave your own. If you own a restaurant, feel free to let the expat community know about it here so that we can come check it out. Found a favorite cafe or have a place we should avoid? Tell us about it. Asian recipes & questions are always welcome.

Expat tipoff?

Post by hdgh29 »

Ever wonder why 'barang' style food is so expensive? Most expat owned restaurants in PP have menus with similar pricing to Aussie or NZ prices. In those countries labour is high cost...minimum wage around $18 an hour. Food ingredients are expensive, rents are typically 30% of turnover. The average hospo business is lucky to make 10% net each month. But in SEAsia? I don't believe it. We are being ripped off.

Did you ever check the prices of imported foodstuffs? And the rents in good locations?

I do not believe that rents in PP are higher or as high as tents in Sydney or Auckland. Example.
10 years ago I owned a restaurant in Ponsonby, Auckland. My rent was $1000 a week.

Oh you were most certainly being ripped off, paying $1000 a week for something you already "owned!"

I believe you, they have some pretty nice tents in Sydney

Don't know about PP (or tents) but I know that rents for good locations in Temple Town are more than that.
