International internet link broken?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. International internet link broken?

Post by timmydownawell »

Dunno if it's just me but while my local internet is fine, international sites like Facebook etc are crawling. A speedtest is showing 0.7Mbps download from LA/NY and 0.4Mbps from Sydney.

Looks like their fancy new cable might have been broken. I'm using Opennet but obviously other providers are using this cable as well.. any reports?

Mine aren't showing any slow-downs. Facebook and my usual news-from-home sites seem to be running just fine.

I have also Opennet: I did a speed test on a server from the Netherlands, using a VPN.
Down 5,4 Kbps, Up 0,8 Kbps.

Does some traffic still go through Vietnam? Read earlier today that one of the cables there has a problem (which seems to happen every 2-3 months).

Maybe, I thought they had all switched to that new fibre submarine cable to Malaysia

That's local PP-PP, try an international server in the US and see how that goes.

Actually it's a lot better this morning:

Yesterday Opennet was dogshit for the US. Something was broken going east. Or they just haven't paid enough. The App store for the ipad still seems fairly unreachable.

Yeah. Local traffic I was getting my usual 20Mbps down/up but international traffic from US and Australia both under a meg as per my original post. Maybe Opennet buggered up their routing or something. Actually first noticed issues on Tuesday with images on Twitter failing to load and it just got worse from there.

Thankfully seems like it was not a cable break.
