Elon Musk's Starlink satellites over Cambodia
So Elon Musk launched 60 satellites the other day that will provide internet to the entire world in a few years. Apparently they will be flying over Cambodia, almost directly above Phnom Penh at about 19:44 this evening and they should be visible to the naked eye.
Video of them flying over the Netherlands earlier today...

Here is Starlink's website if you want to know more about it... https://www.starlink.com/

According to another website it’ll completely miss Cambodia and pass over Hainan at 22:30.

Just bumping this thread, because Starlink will become available in Cambodia in 2022. You can sign up on their website ($99 up front). Total setup cost is $499 and then $99/month. Maybe a bit pricey but for those living in the provinces it might be a good option if you've been relying on 4G. You could always get a wifi extender and share the cost with some of your neighbours.
Not sure if the $99/month price is global or if they'll introduce a regional pricing regime based on your country. Anyway if you're in the sticks it might be worth checking out.

Yeah that's quite pricey for here, but I'm assuming prices will drop over time. Either regional pricing or economies of scale. Most own centers and their vicinity have good internet already, and those that don't won't have a need for blazing fast, super expensive internet. That sort of scheme is more aimed at people in say rural Australia, Canada, US and so forth. What's the advertised bandwidth?

How does it work? Do you pull the data direct from the satellites? Will this remove government ability to censor what goes through the wires in their country.
Or is it just quick internet?
A link to the idiots guide will do @timmydownawell !

You pay $499 for a dish and box/router *plus shipping*, then $99/month during the Beta testing period. After it comes out of Beta it's likely the price will change - and from what I can tell from a bit of Googling it's likely there will indeed be regionally-appropriate pricing, so that bodes well for countries like Cambodia.
I guess it will circumvent Cambodia's gateway project?
EDIT: Starlink pay $1300 for the systems they are selling for $499, so they are absorbing a lot of the cost.

So it's the same witchcraft as satellite TV, just it's the internet instead. Satellite Internet - got it.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 10:06 amYou pay $499 for a dish and box/router *plus shipping*, then $99/month during the Beta testing period. It sounds like possession of a dish in many countries will get you 20 years. How will the government be able to get in the way of you and the satellite and monitor and/or block what you watch, download or upload?
Will Starlink roll over to the various government security services or be a law unto itself, Like Facebook et al?
