Tarot cards and “shaman”

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Tarot cards and “shaman”

Post by whatwat »

Yeah do I know Cambodians are superstitious and believe in ghosts and shit but what’s with the Tarot cards and the village shaman, or whatever he’s called?

My mates wife goes to see a Tarot women like every six months and she seems to live her life thru whatever that person says.
I’ve been in the room with a shaman who asks personal questions and general stuff then tells the person their future - baby, marriage, wealth etc. I asked who’s brand new SUV was on the car park and was told it was given to him because he told the person they would be rich like. So they bought him a Lexus because they did!

The Tarot thing I’ve not experienced but it involves picking cards out and many Khmer (even westernized ones) have told me many of the things have come true.
One girl hasn’t even sat down and the woman said “Oh, you’re pregnant!”, she was two months gone as wasn’t showing.
She was told to sell her land now. So she did.

To be it’s all parlor tricks and they are skilled at reading your body language but then again this is KOW...

So any wives or girlfriends do this. Is it a common thing?

Fairly common I would think among some folk, any who wish to improve their fortune or who are a bit into superstition (so most Khmer) - a little article here about it. https://www.khmertimeskh.com/100173/the ... riverside/

Course you could go to the American fortune teller and find out yourself https://www.khmertimeskh.com/56787/the- ... er-of-bkk/

Have you seen them using Tarot cards. I've only seen them using regular playing cards for fortune telling.
