What made you stay in Cambodia?

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

Beautiful country. Well, used to be, anyway.

The decline started much earlier when they started nationalizing oil and gas in the 70's.

Not all, They have growing anti barang sentiment here.

Plus its boring, theres no big green parks and the locals are content with playing with there phones all day.
Anti-barang sentiment? Please tell me more. I was told that it has always been like that.
True that. It's boring, lacking green spaces, and locals are glued to their phones.

But if you're still here, then there must be something that keeps you here, right?

Let me give you an example: I truly believe, based on my observations, that Cambodia is giant dump populated by simple-minded folks (expats and locals alike). However, I enjoy having a night out with the boys at a girly bar and spend less than $500 combined, spending $80 at a given restaurant when it would've cost between $200-$300 back home, not paying $3k/ month for a 450sq ft apartment, and being able to travel to more civilized places fairly easily (e.i. Singapore, Japan, South Korea).

Your turn.

Others said that they could no longer afford living in the west. Some of you like Brody seem to want Khmer women for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Besides all that, what made you stay in Cambodia? What made you fall in love with the place?
Some of you are probably wondering about what a beta or an "incel" male is. Here you go, from an online source:

A beta male is the male below him (or second in command) and an omega male is the lowest ranking male. Since women are more attracted to alpha males than any other type of guy, if you're not an alpha male then you are less attractive to women than you could be.

Incel definition, from "urban dictionary":
incel
aka "involuntarily celibate"
nb: the definition included was a too biased to including, but someone is is involuntarily celibate would like to have frequent sexual relations and may be unable to get a sexual partner for reasons of appearance, personality, etc.

The only anti-barang sentiment is for asshats and snobs who complain all the time and deserve it. And you are replying to someone who has never lived in Cambodia. He an inveterate liar though so will try to BS that he's been here years, even though he has regularly posted about living in Australia, Ireland and other places during that period. And people playing on phones is hardly a local phenomenon.

Nothing made me stay, I left. Left mostly for the benefit of my kids as I believe they will have more opportunities growing up in the states.

If I did stay it would be:
1) My employment was much more enjoyable
2) I hate cold weather
3) Miss my motorbike
4) Hate the "first world problems" and manufactured dramas

If I did stay I think my work would have become less enjoyable as a result of the influx from China.

Lack of alternative options I guess regarding visas - especially if you work from home; also can live more freely here without hassle as opposed to UK for example.
