Schooldays Shortened as Heatwave Prevention Measure

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

It was announced yesterday by the Education Minister that schooldays will begin 30 minutes later and end 30 minutes earlier in a temporary measure to reduce the time that children spend in overheated classrooms.
However, it has been suggested that starting classes 30 minutes earlier in the morning when it is coolest and closing 1 hour earlier than usual could prove to be more efficient.

School day shortened in Cambodia amid heatwave fears for children
26/04/2019
Cambodian authorities have ordered a one-hour reduction in the length of school days because of concerns that students and teachers may fall ill from a prolonged heatwave.

The country’s education minister Hang Chuon Naron said in an announcement on Friday that the shortened hours will remain in effect until the rainy season starts, which usually occurs in May.

The current heat wave, in which temperatures are regularly reaching as high as 41C (106F), is one of the longest in memory.

Most schools in Cambodia lack air conditioning, prompting concern that temperatures inside classrooms could rise to unhealthy levels.

School authorities were instructed to watch for symptoms of heat stroke and urge pupils to drink more water.

The new hours cut 30 minutes off the beginning of the school day and 30 minutes off the end.

School authorities instituted a similar measure in 2016.

Smart move to start 30 minutes later. Why not have all the classes in the afternoon, even better.

It is cool in the morning. There is no benefit of starting later. They could start earlier.

I would be more concerned about the older government
workers that have to go to work and don't have a air-con office to sit in. Don't want 70 year old military men dying on the job do we.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

In Primary half of the kids have class in the morning, half in the afternoon. So there's no room to move classes to the afternoon.

Starting at 6.30 for morning class and stop at 10 would ease it a bit, and afternoon classes from 3-6. But for the teachers that would be quite an uncomfortable schedule.

Do you think all these people actually turn up to jobs. A large majority only rock up once or twice a week/month and collect a salary. That is why they paid so much for it in the first place.
