New airport planned for Mondulkiri
Re: New airport planned for Mondulkiri
"At the time, the Secretariat Of Civil Aviation (SCCA) estimated a new airport would be built on an area of 300 hectares and is estimated to cost more than USD $60 million. At the time, it was believed the new airport would have an 1800-metre runway."
Are they sure $60M? I think he might have a at least one zero missing. I don' think the building could be completed for $60M.

Those renditions are always misleading here. It's a sleepy, one-street provincial town... Tiny building is all that's needed, or if it's big it'll be like a hanger inside, built on the cheap.cambo swa wrote:"At the time, the Secretariat Of Civil Aviation (SCCA) estimated a new airport would be built on an area of 300 hectares and is estimated to cost more than USD $60 million. Either way that rendition is bullshit, and there won't be much to see in Mondulkiri is coming years as everything is logged out.

Re: New airport planned for Mondulkiri
‘2022 the year’ for Mondulkiri airport
Thou Vireak | Publication date 16 February 2021 | 21:30 ICT
The long-discussed regional-level airport in Mondulkiri province may break ground as soon as next year, according to State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) spokesman Sin Chansereyvutha.
Chansereyvutha told The Post that the airport in Mondulkiri will be built on a 300ha site with a capital investment of about $80 million.
And Mondulkiri provincial governor Svay Sam Eang previously told The Post that provincial authorities are demarcating a 600ha plot for the new airport some 22km south of Sen Monorom town in O’Raing district’s Sen Monorom commune.
Prime Minister HE on February 10 signed a resolution establishing an inter-ministerial committee to oversee the project, as an initial feasibility study conducted by SSCA nears completion.
The committee has been commissioned to spearhead talks on a framework agreement with Powerchina International Group Ltd (PIG) to implement the project and associated infrastructure works, according to the resolution.
It is also tasked with leading, assessing, evaluating and providing recommendations for studies concerning the project, as well as helming and negotiating public-private partnership agreements until final formal agreements are signed.
Chansereyvutha said the initial feasibility study would be completed by the end of the month and submitted to the government for approval. “We are currently carrying out the technicalities for the development of the new airport.”
After the study, SSCA and PIG will hammer out the terms of the concession agreement, he said, adding that it would likely take almost a year before the airport breaks ground.
In a December 31 letter, the Council of Ministers said the government had decided in principle to allow PIG to study and develop a proposal to build the project, adding that the Chinese company would have to foot the bill for the project’s initial feasibility study.

Mondulkiri airport behind time: SSCA
May Kunmakara | Publication date 13 October 2021 | 21:36 ICT
Development of a domestic airport in Mondulkiri province, in the northern economic corridor of Cambodia, backed by an $80 million investment is behind schedule as the latest outbreak of the novel coronavirus remains active.
State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) spokesman Sin Chansereyvutha told The Post on October 13 that the latest community outbreak, ensuing lockdown, and tightening of travel curbs have all contributed to work delays.
He emphasised that Cambodia and China have two-week coronavirus quarantine requirements, and that returning Chinese specialists are obliged to undergo Covid-19 tests “recognised by the Chinese embassy here” and spend a third week at home after the initial fortnight of isolation.
These prolonged self-isolation demands “make it difficult for Chinese experts to come and work in and out of our country and China. We hope that once the restrictions are eased, they will resume the work”, he added.
In a December 31 letter, the Council of Ministers, or Cabinet, said the government had decided in principle to allow PowerChina International Group Ltd (PIG) to study and develop a proposal to build the project, adding that the Chinese company would have to foot the bill for the project’s initial feasibility study.
The government also authorised the SSCA to lead the preparation of a Framework Agreement with PIG in accordance with applicable procedures. PIG has since completed a feasibility study report for the development of the airport and nearby industrial park.

Re: New airport planned for Mondulkiri
Makes sense really, to have airport and industrial park together, possible new Chinese factories to employ Cambodian labour. But add an additional 600ha plot or more. I wonder who gets the tree felling contact.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

UPDATE
Mondulkiri Airport Stalled Now Seeking New Investors
By Teng Yalirozy September 20, 2022 6:00 PM
PHNOM PENH – The government must find new partners for the 300-hectare airport project in Mondulkiri, which is in stalemate after the former Chinese partner withdrew its investment, claiming a “financial problem” caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. The total investment is estimated at $80 million.
“The company has a financial problem and cannot comply with our requirements. With the COVID-19 crisis and seeing that it’s a long-term project and implementation, [the Chinese company] asked to withdraw,” State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) Spokesman Sin Chansereyvutha told Cambodianess on Sept. 20.
In December 2021, the government allowed Power China International Group Ltd (PIG) to conduct feasibility studies on this airport project, which is located in Sen Monorom commune, Oreang district, Mondulkiri province, before starting the construction works. But the financial losses the company endured during the pandemic reportedly left it with no choice but to withdraw.
Chansereyvutha of SSCA said the government is now seeking other partners interested in investing in the project. “Most [investing companies] faced problems during the outbreak. Some went bankrupt while some encountered financial problems, forcing them to remove some projects,” he said.
Cambodia has been developing and studying six airport projects from 2019 to 2024 to further promote the aviation sector, according to a report from the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation released on Sept. 16, 2022. The combined investments for such projects are worth $2.83 billion.
The projects include New Phnom Penh international airport, Siem Reap-Angkor international airport, Dara Sakor international airport, Koh Kong airport, Poipet airport, and Mondulkiri airport.

Re: New airport planned for Mondulkiri
Cambodia seeks partners for planned Mondulkiri airport
THURSDAY, June 08, 2023
Cambodia is looking for partners for the development of a planned airport in Mondulkiri province after PowerChina International Group Ltd (PIG) withdrew during the Covid-19 crisis and negotiations with other foreign companies fell through, according to a senior civil aviation official.
The airport is planned for a 300ha site in O’Raing district’s Sen Monorom commune – which borders the town of the same name to the south – and is anticipated to cost more than $80 million. The Chinese state-owned PIG had been granted in-principle approval by the Cambodian government to study and draft a proposal for the project.
Sinn Chanserey Vutha, undersecretary of state and official spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), confirmed to The Post on June 6 that companies from countries such as China and South Korea have met the authorities regarding the airport.
According to development plans, each of the Kingdom’s airports should in theory be from 150-250km away from the next one, he explained, highlighting the Sihanoukville and Dara Sakor airports as a notable exception to the rule – at nearly 60km apart.
A Mondulkiri airport, he said, would facilitate travel for domestic and foreign tourists between “economic poles” (or regions of concentrated economic activity), as well as speed up the movement of freight.
“The SSCA is working hard to find legitimate, top-quality partners to invest in this project,” Chanserey Vutha said.
