How much would it cost?
Re: How much would it cost?
Check out earthbag homes using rice hulls after the first few coarses of earth.
"Earthbags have the tremendous advantage of providing either thermal mass or insulation, depending on what the bags are filled with. When filled with soil they provide thermal mass, but when filled with lighter weight materials, such as crushed volcanic stone, perlite, vermiculite, or rice hulls, they provide insulation. The bags can even act as natural non-wicking, somewhat insulated foundations when they are filled with gravel."
The walls are then cemented just like the typical khmer brick building accept the walls are 18" thick full of insulation.

Or, same concept, burrows like Hobbit houses.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 5:17 pm This has been a really interesting thread. I am almost tempted to build again. Would fancy doing a place on stilts with solar panels, passive cooling etc.

Re: How much would it cost?
You're asking if adobe = rammed earth? No, it's a little different in that rammed earth is compacted into standing molds - that is, you build a mold for a wall and then progressively pack and compress substrate into it. The compaction is the key, turns out to be very dense and a good insulator.RickyBobby wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 6:41 pmAdobe?StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 5:39 pmI wonder whether rammed earth with an outer protective skin/barrier would work in the tropics as well as it does in dry heat environments for passive cooling. Quite liked the open brick idea around the ground level area tbh.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 5:39 pmI wonder whether rammed earth with an outer protective skin/barrier would work in the tropics as well as it does in dry heat environments for passive cooling. Rammed earth is a much drier mix and can contain a little cement to make it hold, it's the compression that gives it it's properties.

It looks great, and you could screen it in with flyscreen so it's a useful area at night, too.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 8:13 pmQuite liked the open brick idea around the ground level area tbh.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 5:39 pmI wonder whether rammed earth with an outer protective skin/barrier would work in the tropics as well as it does in dry heat environments for passive cooling.
