What is the custom if a khmer bridegroom pulls out of a wedding?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

What is the custom if a khmer bridegroom pulls out of a wedding?

Post by Clutch Cargo »

Mrs Cargo asked me this morning: "In your country, do you go to jail if you change your mind about getting married?" I initially said "huh"??

Anyway, a family member is due to get married in the province next week and he has recently not been answering any calls from the bride to be, his mother and family siblings.

Now it might all be a storm in a tea cup and there might be a logical explanation to come. However.... some are starting to suspect he might want to back out at the last minute. :dragonchase:

The bride and the family are now threatening to send him to jail and want money compensation. Furthermore, they are threatening to send his mother to jail as well on account she was the one that "arranged" the matchmake.

Despite living here a fair while, I must admit not really being across the trials and tribulations of khmer courtship and marriage. I figure some money settlement would come into it given the loss of face for the bride and family plus inconvenience caused to all concerned. However jail???

What say ye.. most learned and knowledgeable CEO expats?

Typically if the bride or her family pull out, then return the dowry. If the groom pulls out, they'd likely keep part of the dowry. Depends on what's negotiated as it's really case by case. They might agree to return it all as well. Never heard of a jail sentence, that's just ludicrous.

There's nothing illegal about pulling out of a marriage arrangement, the families will have a sit down with a mediator from the Sangkat and negotiate monetary compensation, he can't be locked up.

...but a sword fight would be cool!

If she gave up her virginity on the promise of marriage, she could be now be classified as damaged goods and a claim for compensation could be made.

Compensation for loss of face, will probably keep the dowry. Maybe there's drama because he didn't give them the dowry before bailing :stir:

I've often seen Khmers (and occasionally westerners) who say they'll sue or have someone put in jail when they feel they have been wronged, regardless of whether laws have actually been broken. In the case of poor people it's usually because they simply don't understand how laws work, and in the case of rich people it's because laws are often regarded as a surpassable technicality. Either way it rarely amounts to anything.

Apparently, her originality status is still intact  so she will get to live another day to market her virtuosity to another young khmer buck.
