Government To Take Railway From Royal Group

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Government To Take Railway From Royal Group

The private sector should have been able to do a better job. I'm hoping for an improvement in rail services in future.

Is something strange going on there? I keep seeing "the Royal group" in articles.... This one (train), Power cuts, and the rock arrests.

From the outside it almost looks like there is some kind of power shift among the rich and powerful?

Curious.

The train service to kampot has been terrible this year. One time it took me 12 hours from kampot to the outskirts of PP. Then people were waiting in the dark for a van or something.
Absolutely no information or someone apologising. Totally disgusting

Kampot is typically 5 hours.

But it's shit rolling stock, on a shit narrow gauge restored line. So, yeah, it's shit and only useful to transport containers and produce.

The passenger service is just an afterthought.

I doubt any other company will improve it without a total redevelopment, which means Chinese getting in on it.

The years before it was always on time when I took it, beetween 4 and 5 hours. It was just this year when all that shit started.
They should have just stopped the service if they don't have enough engines or whatever the problem was.
Instead they decided to just don't care and ruin people's journeys.

Last month i took the train down to Kampot,It was pulled by a very old shunter that was leaking water from the radiator before we had even left Phnom Penh.We got as far as 12km north of Takao when the train stopped accross a level crossing completly blocking the road, the engine was still running but he could not get it to move, either brakes stuck on or gears fucked.
we sat there for about one and a half hours with no information forthcomming, but eventually were told that spare parts were being sent,no indication of how long this would take,we were only 500m from the main road to Taakao so we carried our luggage up to the road and took a taxi the rest of the way,for all i know the shunter might still be there.........

They have been using the new airport railcars between PP and SHV lately. And the Poipet line has been closed for a couple of weeks and they have no idea when it will resume. Was supposed to start connections to Thailand in March but the MOU has still yet to be signed and the new international station on the Thai side is still being completed.

Agreed, and the ladies at the information/ticketing booth at the PP train station are downright bitches for lack of a better term. You can tell they got the job because they're someone's wife, not because of their customer service. You almost have to tell at them to let you buy a ticket as they're so busy watching Thai soaps on their phones (even after they've seen you--gotta wait for the commercial break or something). Slow, shitty service, hour long waits in the middle of nowhere... A pathetic attempt at rail service. Let's see if the government is able to revamp it.
