40 sports approved for 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia
Monday, 11 Apr 2022
8:22 PM MYT
PHNOM PENH, April 11 (Xinhua): A total of 40 sports will be at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia next year, the Cambodian SEA Games Organizing Committee (CAMSOC) said in a news release on Monday.

The 40 sports for the regional event were approved by the South East Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Council during a three-day hybrid meeting that concluded in northwest Cambodia's Siem Reap province on Sunday, the release said, adding that Cambodian national martial arts Kun Bokator will be for the first time contested at next year's event.

"It will be the highest number of sports to be competed being confirmed for any nation hosting the Games for the first time since 1977," the news release said.

Brunei, Vietnam and Laos included 21, 32 and 29 sports respectively when they first hosted the Games. This year's Games in Vietnam will also see 40 sports being competed.

Cambodia could still see an increase in the number of sports if the request for sports like Indonesia's Pencak Silat is accepted at the SEAGF Council meeting, expected to be held in June this year in Phnom Penh.

The 32nd SEA Games will be held in May 2023, and the China-aided Morodok Techo National Stadium in the Northern suburb of the capital Phnom Penh will be the centerpiece venue for the games.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the SEAGF Council on Sunday, CAMSOC president Gen. Tea Banh, also the Defence Minister of Cambodia, said the kingdom is ready to host the biennial sports event.

SEA Games host Cambodia vows no medal-fixing
Cambodia has promised to uphold the principles of justice fairness and transparency and ensure there is strictly no match-fixing when it hosts the 64th SEA Games next year.

Apart from vying for more gold medals, the first-time host also hopes to better its medal tally against other countries, Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) secretary-general Vath Chamroeun said recently.

“On that basis, Cambodia would not allow any scandal involving the fixing of results to win medals in any sport,” he reiterated.

Citing the advice of Deputy Prime Minister Tea Banh, who is also CAMSOC president, Chamroeun said the committee has to do its best and be honest and fair in their technical work.

As such, the rules of the game will be respected, including the principles of fair play.

Previously, Tourism Minister Thong Khon, also the permanent vice president of CAMSOC and chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), said he would not be held responsible if there was any case of medal fixing in any sport.

Tennis federation taking aim at SEA Games double’s gold
Chhorn Norn | Publication date 22 August 2022 | 20:24 ICT
With the Kingdom set to host the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in 2023, Cambodian tennis players weighed in on what they thought their chances of medaling would be.

Experienced 29-year-old player Long Samneang – who won bronze in the team event at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia – said he did not have high hopes of winning in the singles matches, but thought the doubles events might offer a path to the podium.

For example, he said, in 2011 Vietnam was ranked lower than Cambodia, but now they are very strong – claiming old at this year’s games. Thailand and Indonesia remained as strong as ever, and even Laos was bringing in French players to improve their own singles’ players.

He expressed high hopes for the doubles’ matches, especially the men’s pair event. He believed that if he was paired with elite player Bun Kenny, they had a good chance.

First Cambodian breakdance listed for SEA Games 2023

Cambodia Dance-sport Federation (CDF) has selected Cambodian national breakdance athletes for the 32nd SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia.

The selection took place on Oct. 12-13 at the National Training Sports Center (NTSC) and Tiny Toones here in Phnom Penh.

It was supported by Japanese DOD Dance School following a Memorandum of Understanding between the school and the Federation.

Mrs Hang Simorn, CDF Secretary General, said this will be the first time for Cambodian athletes to perform breakdance at the SEA Games.

Through the MoU, the school will send its Japanese coaches to train Cambodian athletes in the country and the Cambodian athletes will also get trained in Japan.

Four athletes including two men and two women will be selected by the Japanese coach to train in Cambodia for two months before going for another three-month training in Japan, continued the secretary general.

“Only one man and one woman will take part in a breakdance event at the SEA Games, but we will select four athletes including the backups,” she added.

The Japanese dance-sport coach is committed to helping the Cambodian national athletes to win medals at SEA Games 2023.

Breakdance made its debut at the SEA Games in 2019, with five countries taking part in the event including the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Lim Nary – AKP

From the Philippines:
Top jiu-jitsu bets won’t compete in Cambodia
By Bong Pedralvez -
December 5, 2022

[Filipinas] KIM Custodio and Meggie Ochoa, the world women’s jiu-jitsu champions, won’t be around to compete in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in May next year after the Cambodian hosts decided not to include their weight categories in the calendar of events.

The two emerged triumphant in the World Jiu Jitsu Championships last month in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

“It is really a disappointment but we can’t do anything about it,” rued Custodio, 35, who has yet to make her debut in the regional sportsfest despite her success at the world level.

This development is even more frustrating for Ochoa, 32, who has set her sights on a third straight gold in the SEA Games after dominating her weight class in the 2019 Philippine edition and the Vietnam Games just last May.

“Of course, I wanted to win a third straight gold in the SEA Games but it is really out of my hands because Cambodia is the host,” said the petite yet formidable Pinay grappler.

“This is a disappointing development, because the skill and talent of these two ladies make them sure gold medalists,” noted national team coach Stephen Kamhuis of New Zealand.

“They (Cambodian organizers) really cherry-picked the events which is quite abnormal,” added Kamphuis (pronounced camphouse), who understood the rationale of the move.

“I was the competition manager for jiu jitsu in the 2019 SEA Games so I can understand the motive of the hosts limiting the events where your athletes are strongest,” he said. “But back then we tried to be fair to everyone.”

AKP Phnom Penh, January 05, 2023 --
Image
Cambodia is preparing physical decorations throughout the country to promote the SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games 2023 to the public from Jan. 15 to early February or March.

The update was shared by H.E. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) and the Cambodian ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (CAMAPGOC) in a meeting chaired by H.E. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and Permanent Vice President of CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC here in Phnom Penh on Jan. 3.

The grand decorations are expected to attract the locals as well as sports fans in other countries to the games that Cambodia will host this year, said H.E. Vath Chamroeun.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Samdech Pichey Sena Tea Banh and H.E. Thong Khon encouraged the technical committees to make the best of the decorations to demonstrate national pride and get them ready before the 100-day countdown to launch of the games.

According to H.E. Vath Chamroeun, in Phnom Penh the promotion will begin from Phnom Penh International Airport to main streets across the capital.
