"Science does not kill God"

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. "Science does not kill God"

Post by StroppyChops »

Interesting article about Marcelo Gleiser, recipient of the Templeton Prize.

The annual Templeton Prize, which recognizes outstanding contributions to "affirming life's spiritual dimension," was awarded Tuesday to Brazilian Marcelo Gleiser -- a theoretical physicist dedicated to demonstrating science and religion are not enemies.

A physics and astronomy professor whose specializations include cosmology, 60-year-old Gleiser was born in Rio de Janeiro, and has been in the United States since 1986.

An agnostic, he doesn't believe in God -- but refuses to write off the possibility of God's existence completely.

"Atheism is inconsistent with the scientific method," Gleiser told AFP Monday from Dartmouth College, the New Hampshire university where he has taught since 1991.

"Atheism is a belief in non-belief. So you categorically deny something you have no evidence against."

"I'll keep an open mind because I understand that human knowledge is limited," he added.
One of the attributes of CEO that I have always appreciated is that there are many self-professed agnostics here who actually speak with authority on what the Bible says, as they've read it, and can argue scriptures with armchair-atheists far better than I can.

I will get out of my arm chair long enough to ask how does one gather evidence against that which does not. exist?

Indeed. Believers carry the burden of proof. And I insist that it survive rigorous empirical examination before it is placed on the alter of truth next to beautiful sunsets and other feel good nonsense.

You have no proof that I didn't have sex with an elf whilst riding a unicorn.

Nor do I have any doubt.

Well the elf claims you had sex with the unicorn. Had a DVD to prove it.

All loving, all merciful, all powerful God who knows everything that will ever happen before it happens gets so upset about the way his creation turned out that he drowns every man, woman and child on the planet except one family, and this one family repopulated the entire planet within 6000 years.

Who could possibly read that and not see the multitude of absurdities and contradictions? You don't need to be a theoretical physicist to disprove it, it disproves itself. Other religions can be disproved using the same method, you just have to examine the claims.
