PRC's looking towards Kampot province due to water problems in Sihanoukville

Post by Josh_76 »

Posted by a local real estate friend of mine on FB. He's had inquiries by several PRC Chinese interested in Kampot due to the availability of water. Apparently, some places in Sihanoukville have run out and have water (of questionable quality) trucked in.

This isn't even a serious drought yet. Makes you wonder how bad it is going to get. How do you say "unsustainable development" in Khmer?

A river runs through it. And river water can be made potable.

Unsustainable growth=casino and more casinos. PRC are buying land in Tbong Kmum, but I don't think it's about water.

Yes, but like SHV, they need to add capacity to their infrastructure to treat a higher volume of water and pipe it to the end users. Takes time to build and I think Kampot already suffers from low water pressure/no water sometimes. However the source of water that could be treated might be bigger in Kampot compared to the various reservoirs/river in the SHV Kbal Chai watershed area.

I saw a bunch of Asian chaps at a riverside eatery in Kampot recently and another group of expats being quite vocal about “The bloody Chinese” and “Better not be taking over here that lot of chunks” etc etc.

Anyway. The owner (Khmer) asked them to be quite or he’d ban them and they were actually his friends from Malaysia visiting one of them’s daughters who works there.

Asian and not Khmer = Chinese = casino, resource hogging communist scum. Blah blah.

To be honest I was quite embarrassed by their comments and behaviour but they just shrugged and said “Well they

This attitude against Chinese has been around in Cambodia for a while but got worse after their investment run on Sihanoukville.

@davegorman , your quote

There's only a few chinese in Kampot eventhough the Cambodian and Chinese have some Military Excercise going on in the Chumkriel District of Kampot Province. The Chinese have not bothered anyone in Kampot, yet which is contrary to the western trash that washed up on Kampot's shore mainly coming from Sihanoukville.

Back to the subject... Water Shortage:
Kampot has it's share of Watershortage mainly because of the rapid growth of Infrastructure and Housing. This has nothing to do with Chinese ! Eventhough Kampot has a large Water Reservoir to draw Water from the City of Kampot often gets a dribble of it during the day and only those that invested in a Water Tank benefit from a secure flow of Water.

We have at least another 2-3 Month of very hot weather in front of us with Temperatures raising up to 42 degree (according to the gov.
quote:
The ministry’s advisory comes after the government, early this year, said that the Kingdom will be indirectly affected by the El Nino phenomenon which will cause temperatures to rise to between 40 degrees and 42 degrees Celsius in April and May.

The solution offered by "stiliko" to use the riverwater to make it potable is not practical here in Kampot due to the high salination. The Water is brackish and the quality changes with ebb and flood. To make this potable would require a huge investment which noone wants to get involved in. The entire city of Kampot depends on Government Water since Well Water is contaminated with Saltwater seeping in.
Those that live close to the Bokor Mountain Range, like Andong Khmer / Intl. Village are more lucky because there you can use very good quality Water from your well. A few years ago we had a severe drought here but the only 20 mtr. deep well delivered water allyear round.
