$100,000 scam

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

$100,000 scam

Post by explorer »

In Australia there is a television program called The Embassy. This program shows the experiences of Australians in other countries.

In a recent episode, there was a story about an Australian who paid $100,000 for an apartment in Thailand. After paying the money, he did not get any paperwork, so he did not own the apartment. There were other people also caught in the same scam. When the purchasers would go away, the seller would change the locks, and rent the apartments out to other people.

The purchaser was hoping to get this resolved in the future. I suspect he has little hope.

Be careful when purchasing real estate in Asia.

Did they use a solicitor or were they in on the scam too?

There's a specific legal procedure for the purchase of real estate, such as a condo in this case, in Thailand as well as in many (most?) countries. If you're unfamiliar with that and unwilling to educate yourself, but willing to transfer $100,000, that is obviously quite a big problem.
