Cambodia and the Issue of China’s Debt Trap
China’s debt trap, also called debt-trap diplomacy, is a topic of significant interest which has gained increasing attention in recent years. From Africa to Asia and even in South America, the issue of the Chinese debt trap associated with China’s no strings attached aid and loans have often become news headlines.

...Despite [these] mounting concerns, Cambodian Prime Minister HE has reassured his people that Cambodia would not fall into China’s debt trap and that the country would stand to significantly benefit from China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

HE’s reassurance is valid if we consider the benefits and influence of the BRI on Cambodia’s economic growth and physical infrastructure development. Also, it is true that BRI has so far presented more economic benefits than risks to Cambodia.

However, this should not preclude Cambodia from being mindful of its embrace of the BRI and its acceptance of China’s unconditional aid and loans.

While taking advantage of the BRI and the influx of Chinese money and tourists, Cambodian leaders need to exercise prudence in their efforts to bring the country forward economically and socially.

To avoid falling into the China debt trap, it is advisable that the Kingdom work on reducing its public debt and improving debt management capacity. One way the government can do is to seriously engage in public institutional reforms to ensure that aid and loans are managed effectively.

Last year a government spokesman said something along the lines of China offers infrastructure, the west offered backpackers and marijuana.

This is a pretty accurate statement but neglects the significant aid in agriculture and health programs that directly benefit the most marginalised populations.

Budget tourism also provided business opportunities for the little people who now are left behind.

The west does not have a very good record in helping Cambodia to grow, but also has no military or imperial ambitions in the region

Sticks and stones, and a little journalism.

the west offered backpackers and marijuana.
It is clouds in the sky for where did the pot come from.
The west and their allies have supported and donated as it had been in need, landmine clearance, training and education, drugs, aid and support for casualty. EBA good at the time, but too many conditions, especially when someone offers an alternative.

the east offers on-line crime and hard drugs. How time moves on.
Then again the big boss is doing the good by stamping out drug crime.
But, also sound no debt offers, with partnership with infrastructures and business. It seemed to all have started in the little beach town of backpackers, now to be a gambling mecca for Chinese tourists and a health, polluted concern. I think it will all turn out well in the end, for no problem with the debt like others been mentioned here. That was sorted out at the start with giving upto 99 year leases.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

When elephants fight, Pt 1

The use of elephants in war in the region began as early as the 9th-century. The Khmer Empire—now modern-day Cambodia—ruled Thailand for centuries, with war elephants an effective tool in their arsenal which helped them to conquer and subjugate those around them. The collapse of the Khmer Empire and the rise of Ayutthaya (modern-day Thailand) saw war elephants continue to be used in battle.

While elephants were a powerful tool for centuries, the advent of gunpowder saw their effectiveness on the battlefield dwindle, and the use of vehicles and alternate transport options saw their role as transporters become obsolete.

This was typified in an exchange between President Abraham Lincoln and Thailand’s King Rama IV; the Thai King offered elephants to the President in 1862 to help with the civil war effort, but the President graciously turned down the offer, explaining the steam power on water and on land rendered their uses obsolete.

That's the African proverb, the Cambodian one is more on the lines of:
When elephants fight, the ants perish.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
