Sixty-year-old American sent to court for child sex offences

Phnom Penh authorities have sent a US national to court after his arrest on Saturday for the rape of five underage girls and involvement in child prostitution.

Initial reports indicate there may be further victims and suspects in the case.

On Saturday evening, the 60-year-old was detained at a massage parlour in the capital’s Kakab II commune in Por Sen Chey district.

Phnom Penh Department of Anti-human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection director Keo Thea told The Post on Monday that the man had long been suspected of committing such offences but there had not previously been enough evidence to arrest him.

“[He] had been in Cambodia a long time and we had known [of his crimes], but we did not have concrete evidence to arrest him. Only recently did we obtain the evidence needed to do so. There are other relevant persons we are currently investigating. We cannot reveal more,” he said.

“Currently we have charged him on two counts – child prostitution and aggravated sexual assault of a minor. There are five minors involved in the case, three of them aged eight, while the two others are [now] over 18, but the offences are continuous until his arrest. According to the investigation, there are other victims – our police are further working on the case.”

American tourist tried over paedophilia allegations
Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday began the trial of an American tourist who allegedly had sex with five minors.

Presiding Judge Le Sokha identified the accused as 60-year-old tourist Danny Lee Pope.

Judge Sokha said the accused was charged with sexual intercourse with a minor and purchase of child prostitution. If convicted, the accused could be jailed between five to ten years.

He noted the accused was arrested by Phnom Penh police’s anti-human trafficking department in Por Senchey district on March 2.

Colonel Keo Thea, chief of the anti-human trafficking department, yesterday said the accused was wanted for sexual abuse of minors in 2007, but fled overseas before he was able to be arrested.

Col Thea said the accused returned to the Kingdom and was arrested on March 2 at a massage parlour in Kakap II commune.

He noted the accused allegedly brought an underage girl to have sex with him at the massage parlour.

Col Thea said police were tipped off by the girl’s family who was concerned.

He said after the family filed a complaint against the accused, police made the arrest.

“After he was arrested, police rescued five girls aged eight to 15,” Col Thea said. “All five victims said they had sex with Mr Pope.”

He noted that the victims were sent to a children’s organisation so they can learn new life skills.

The accused during the trial yesterday denied the allegations. He said the victims were his adopted daughters whose families were given financial support.
The accused said he sent the girls to school and he never had sexual intercourse with the victims.
“They were my adopted daughters. I used to feed them. I did not commit anything as accused,” he said.

American jailed for sex with underage girls
Phnom Penh Municipal Court today sentenced an American man to seven years in prison for having sex with five Cambodian underaged girls between 2007 and 2019.

Judge Le Sokha, the presiding judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court, identified the accused as Pope Danny Lee, 60, an American tourist.

Pope was charged with “sexual intercourse with a minor under fifteen years and child prostitution” under Articles 34 and 42 on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation. He was arrested on March 3 last year by anti-human trafficking police in Por Senchey district.

“Based on the testimonies of the five victims who said they each had sex with the accused Pope Danny Lee on several occasions between 2007 and 2019, the court convicts and sentences him to seven years in prison,” Judge Sokha said.

The Judge informed, Pope can file an appeal within a one month period.
