Adult Literacy Schools/courses (Khmer)

Post by nave »

Hey guys,

There's a girl that I've recently come to know(not really a "girl" she's 20+). She's sweet but doesn't read or write Khmer.
I would really like to have her enroled in an adult literacy course.
I've seen so many organizations on the web that are very eager in advertising their achivements, but so far have not found any explaining how to be admitted in their programs. Do any of you know if there are any schools/organizations that addmits adults for literacy education? If there are any, I would prefer a course with a tuition fee. I don't really trust charity organizations..

Cheers

Cambodia runs a little know programme called BEEP = Basic Education Equivalency Programme - for adults seeking to redress their lack of formal education in their earlier years.

Posters are correct in that it is very hard to find points of contact for the five BEEP centres in Phnom Penh and the five in Siem Reap.

But a starting point in tracking this information down is at the foot of this UNESCO posting:

https://en.unesco.org/fieldoffice/phnom ... ortunities.

Good luck and please post your findings so others may benefit.

Contact your local Provincial Office of Education. All of them run literacy courses for adults and they're supposed to be free.

Apparently it is quite difficult for Khmers to learn to read and write Khmer as an adult (possibly exacerbated by teaching issues). A lot easier to learn to read and write English!

Makes sense, only speak, or also read and write?

Not just for adults. In formal education they reserve almost an entire schoolyear just to learn the basics of the Khmer script.
