Continuing my adventure and made a pitstop over in malaysia... Gotta say kuala is definitely a neat place. Eating comparable to phnem with a sophisticated public transport network.

A couple of times every year I travel from KL to Butterworth by bus and the area around Opoh and Genting mountains looks great with mountains of limestone reaching for the sky. Pity about all the cement works though.

The changes in KL over the last decade are rather disappointing in many ways. They're a victim of their own success and prosperity, I feel.

It's becoming very built up. So the skyline is busy, whereas before it was quite interesting. Petronas Towers used to be very prominent from many directions, and now are slowly being obscured.

China town used to be a regular haunt when we had a base there. It's still buzzing, but there's a feeling of it having lost something. Many of the vendors are pushy and rude now, rather than enthusiastic and colourful. Hard sell, less banter.
The changes to Bukit Bintang seem sterile. It seems to have become busy, less character. Subtly.
Also seems more pricey.

The public transport network is good, though with so much more of it. Years ago I remember the city divided up by two networks, N-S and E-W (roughly speaking) and go anywhere by taxi quite quickly, for pennies. Now, the traffic is mad, quicker to walk. Not so cheap. Too many Starbucks.

It's still interesting, but...

My last trip, I wanted to head off to Genting. The old rickety roller coaster on the hill was fun- I'm told it's gone, now. I'd have liked to go and take SWMBO, but time ran out.

Everything changes, Nothing stays the same.

I imagine many will have similar feelings about Sihanoukville and I see Phnom Penh doing the same. Albeit, KL has developed, whereas PP seems more to have been thrown back into it, given the country's history.
It will become more popular, and lose some of the best of itself.

I'm fine with the land development.. as the community moves forward so do the people at large who live there.

Prices imo are pretty decent considering hygiene, fresh and quality products. Ill go hit up a localarket to really see the down low....

I was in KL for a few days recently. Was good to be in a real city for a change. Because of the cultural mix there's a much wider variety of food, especially the very good Chinese and Middle Eastern, and at a good price. Supermarket prices were lower there (e.g. 1L milk $1.50 instead of $2), but ofc a can of beer was $1.50 not 50c.

Drugs might attract the death penalty there, but that didn't seem to deter the dealer I saw getting ripped off in the laneway outside where I was staying. He handed the goods over to two guys on a moto, who promptly rode off without paying. He managed to stop the third guy on a second moto, but he jumped off and legged it. At least the dealer scored a moto out of it, but he wasn't happy.

If I could live in Malaysia I'd definitely do it, but the MM2H program sets the bar a little high, you need a $2500/month income.
