Ibis Rice buys up paddy from NGO’s eco-friendly farmers
Post Staff | Publication date 24 December 2021 | 17:03 ICT
Sansom Mlup Prey has announced that a partner, the Ibis Rice - Organic Wildlife Friendly Rice project, has purchased an unspecified amount of paddy from the environmental NGO’s wildlife-friendly farmers at up to 70 per cent above market price.

In a Facebook post this week, Sansom Mlup Prey noted that its Sustainable Rice Platform initiative encourages farmers to grow rice and deter them from deforestation, wildlife hunting, and forest encroachment.

The initiative trains farmers on how to produce rice in accordance with organic standards and supports them in their pursuit of new markets, the NGO said, adding that Ibis Rice is available in major supermarkets in Cambodia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, and Germany and soon in the UK.

Cambodia exported 170,539 tonnes of milled rice from January to March, 2022, netting more than US$145 million.

The update was shared on April 1 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), stressing that the total milled rice export increased by 10.96 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

Of the exported milled rice, 120,422 tonnes or 70.61 percent were fragrant rice, while white rice accounted for 26.63 percent or 48,827 tonnes, and parboiled rice 0.76 percent or 1,290 tonnes.

FAO Says East Asian Rice Prices Below or Close to Year-Earlier Levels in March
ចេញផ្សាយ ថ្ងៃទី ១៥ ខែ មេសា ឆ្នាំ ២០២២
AKP Phnom Penh, April 15, 2022 --

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says rice prices among major producers in Far East Asia last month were stable compared to March last year.

“Prices of rice increased in the subregion’s main exporters while remaining below or close to their year-earlier levels,” the FAO said in its monthly Food Price Monitoring and Analysis Bulletin released in Rome on Thursday.

In Vietnam, the bulletin said prices rose “marginally” with the progress of the main winter-spring harvest which is estimated to be above average.

“Overall, prices in March remained more than 20 percent below their year-earlier levels, following strong declines throughout 2021,” it said.

“Similarly, moderate price increases were recorded in Thailand due to a pick-up in demand, although prices were well below their year-earlier levels due to good local availabilities and expectations for an above-average 2021/22 secondary crop, currently being harvested.”

But “significant price increases were recorded for the third consecutive month in Myanmar, where prices rose by 18 percent month on month to high levels, linked to seasonal trends and strong international demand.

“Seasonal price increases were also behind the rice price increases in Cambodia.” In China, the monthly report on food price trends said “adequate market availabilities kept prices stable and close to their year-earlier levels.”

World Bank Sees Rice Prices Easing as Other Grains Skyrocket on War in Ukraine
AKP Phnom Penh, April 27, 2022 --

The World Bank expects global rice prices to fall this year despite surging prices for other grains such as wheat and corn amid supply disruptions triggered by the war in Ukraine.

In its biannual Commodity Markets Outlook released in Washington on Tuesday, the bank said its grain price index was projected to climb 20.4 percent this year compared with 2021.

Wheat prices are forecast to jump 42.7 percent and corn prices are expected to be 19.4 percent higher. But rice prices are seen falling by 7.3 percent.

"Rice prices have been more stable than prices for other grains,” said the outlook, which focuses on the war’s impact on commodity markets.

Although rice prices in the March quarter were six percent higher than the December quarter, they were down more than 20 percent from the March quarter last year.

“The relative stability of rice prices during the past three quarters followed a seven-year high in early 2021 amid heightened pandemic-related concerns about global supply and announcements of export restrictions,” the bank said.

Cambodia — among the world’s top ten rice exporters— recorded double-digit gains in rice shipments during the March quarter, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries says.

Exports of milled rice climbed almost 11 percent from a year earlier to 170,539 tonnes and shipments of paddy were up nearly 14 percent at 1.39 million tonnes.

Bangladesh Eyes Import of Cambodian Rice
AKP Phnom Penh, August 24, 2022 --

Bangladesh is interested in expanding import of Cambodian rice to the country.

The intention was made by H.E. Mohammed Abdul Hye, Bangkok-based Bangladesh Ambassador to Cambodia during a meeting with H.E. Veng Sakhon, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries here in Phnom Penh early this week.

H.E. Mohammed Abdul Hye said although Bangladesh's agriculture, especially the rice production has tripled since 1971, it remains insufficient to meet the demand by the country's 160 million population.

Bangladesh needs to import from 1 to 1.5 million tonnes of rice annually, he added.

Cambodia's new agriculture minister unveils plans for high-quality rice
Tuesday, 01 Nov 2022
12:19 PM MYT

PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network): Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Dith Tina has unveiled plans to boost the use of high-quality rice seeds.

The new varieties, he said, would give higher yields using fewer seeds, grow quickly and be resistant to pests and disease.

The quality of the milled rice they produce, he added, is such that they would demand higher prices on the market.

Tina was speaking at an Oct 31 consultative meeting on the work of rice seed production with experts and representatives of the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF).

Also in attendance were specialists from the ministry and provincial agriculture departments, and Hun Lak, CRF chairman and general-director of Mekong Oryza Trading Co Ltd.

Lak supported the minister’s idea of producing genetically pure rice seeds to supply the Kingdom’sfarmers.

“The use of pure rice seeds will ensure the purity of milled rice for markets at home and abroad,” he said.
