CRF secretary-general Lun Yeng said that exports to the European market, the largest importer of Cambodian rice, in the month fell 22 percent year on year to 5,269 tonnes since the EU Commission introduced safeguard measures last year on rice imports from the country.

However, Lun Yeng said rice exports to the European market are set to increase in the coming months, thanks to a drop in taxes on rice imports from 175 EUR (190.99 USD) per tonne last year to 150 EUR this year.

The EU continued to be the leading destination market for Cambodian rice last month, accounting for the lion’s share of 37 percent, while China held 30 percent of the market, ASEAN 11 percent and other countries 22 percent, according to the CRF report.

Last year, Cambodia produced some 7.9 million tonnes of rice, over 620,000 tonnes of which were set aside for export, falling 1 percent as compared to the amount in 2018./.

Cambodia won a case about the rice tariffs in the EU courts. It's not definitive, the court just rejected the EC's application to dismiss. So presumably it will now proceed to trial. The new tariff has already been in place for 18 months and it expires after three years so it may not matter by the time it is decided.

Cambodian rice fields destroyed by flooding: sources
14 Oct 2020 | 11:10 UTC
Author Peter Storey Editor James Leech

London — Flash floods in Cambodia have inundated much of the country's rice fields in recent days, according to market sources.

The floods follow approximately 10 days of rain, which one exporter described as having been "non-stop". They also come at possibly the worst possible time for farmers, with harvesting of the delayed Sen Kra Ob main crop under way and harvesting of the Phka Malis crop expected imminently.

According to a spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management, cited by Associated Press, "thousands of hectares" of rice fields have been destroyed. One exporter claimed that between 60%-70% of rice fields in the country's rice bowl, Battambang, had been destroyed, with a European broker reporting that "the majority of the SKO [Sen Kra Ob] still in the fields will be wiped out."

Other participants were more cautious in their assessments and said they were waiting for flood water to recede before estimating the extent of the damage. However, one such participant still noted that "we are worrying [about] paddy quality" due to the length of time the paddy will be submerged for during the crop's delicate ripening stage before harvesting.

Exporters noted that they are unable to offer for prompt shipment, with roads submerged and harvesting activities on hold. The situation is not expected to improve in the coming days, with tropical storms Nangka and Saudel forecast to bring further rain to Cambodia between Oct. 15-20 after making landfall in Vietnam.

Exporters are hesitant to offer fresh volumes as a result. S&P Global Platts assessed Sen Kra Ob 5% broken STX at $736/mt FOB FCL on Oct. 9.

Nearly 1 Million Tonnes of Milled Rice Exported to China by Q3
AKP Phnom Penh, October 29, 2020 --

Cambodia has exported nearly 1 million tonnes of milled rice as of the third quarter of 2020, and the figure could reach 1.2 million tonnes in a near future.

The record was revealed on Tuesday by the Cambodia Rice Federation, underlining that the export followed the memorandum of understanding inked by Cambodia and China in 2014.
It is very aligned with the target of the Royal Government of Cambodia to export one million tonnes of milled rice to the international market by 2021, he added.

Cambodia exports 11,200 tonnes of organic rice in 2020
Cambodia shipped 11,200 tonnes of organic milled rice abroad in 2020, a 1.2-percent increase over 2019, according to the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF).
VNA Wednesday, January 13, 2021 16:13

Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodia shipped 11,200 tonnes of organic milled rice abroad in 2020, a 1.2-percent increase over 2019, according to the Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF).

While the milled-rice export sector by and large chalks up 2020’s lacklustre growth performance to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the CRF worked to ramp up sales of Cambodian milled rice abroad.

The CRF said more than 90 percent of the exports were shipped to the European market, while “a small amount” went to the US.

With Cambodia’s total 2020 milled-rice exports weighing in at 690,829 tonnes, organic rice accounted for just 1.6 percent.

Song Saran, president of the CRF and CEO of miller and exporter Amru Rice Cambodia Co Ltd, said total milled-rice exports surged 11.4 percent from 2019, far outshining the growth seen in the organic variant.

OM 5451 rice delivers golden results
Hin Pisei | Publication date 20 May 2021 | 09:51 ICT

Booming demand in the Vietnamese market has taken prices of OM 5451 paddy on a wild ride during and beyond the dry-season rice harvest season this year, according to industry insiders.

OM 5451 is a high-yielding long-grain cultivar of fragrant rice mainly grown in the Mekong Delta, created by a crossbreed combination of Jasmine 85 and OM 2490 varieties for pest and disease resistance.

The cultivar has bulked up yields for the Kingdom’s farmers, with the Khon Rang Reak Reay Cooperative in Kampong Chhnang’s Boribor district logging averages as high as 6.5 tonnes per hectare, according to its head Prum Narin.

In contrast, General Directorate of Agriculture chief Ngin Chhay told The Post late last month that the dry season ended with a total yield of 2.93 million tonnes on a total cultivated area of 646,530ha, or an average of over 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

A list published by the Cambodia Rice Federation on May 17 revealed that OM 5451 is going for 900-950 riel ($0.23-0.24) per kilogramme in Kampong Chhnang province, 920-940 riel in Kampong Thom province, 940-970 riel in Banteay Meanchey province and 900-930 riel in Prey Veng province.

Narin told The Post on May 19 that traders were buying up this year’s dry season paddy at higher prices than last year.

Traders were shelling out up to 1,100 riel per kilogramme in early March, before reducing that to 800 riel, while the harvest was in full swing, he said, adding that the OM 5451 paddy now rakes in 950 riel per kilogramme, up by 14 per cent year-on-year from 830 riel.

Rising demand for the crop was propelled chiefly by the Vietnamese market, he said, noting that local millers were refusing to pay out higher rates.
