Expat misses Cambodia after repatriating to home country.

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Right, something else to blame on the KR. Bullshit, as far as I am concerned. Then food in N. Vietnam should be bad as well, seeing how they had nothing to cook with for decades.
Well, I don't know either way; AND, I did qualify my comment with "apparently", and "Supposedly".

Hanno's quote, not mine.

I suppose they have come a long way since eating the bark off trees, though I wish they would leave the tarantulas alone. Why the fuck would you eat a spider if you didn't have to?

The food quality is not something I miss either. It will remain a mystery to me why Cambodia, sandwiched between 2 countries that are renowned for fine food, turns up such vile fare.
Yes, Khartoum, although I wouldn't call it "vile", only unknown or, 'I don't know what that is". I have a sort of psychological block to eating mystery meats and things that I don't know WTF they are.

Oh, I got sidetracked there. My main point is that I've read that apparently all knowledgeable chefs and Educated, skilled professional food people were among those killed by the Khmer Rouge.

Supposedly it was on a par with other neighboring countries, like Thailand, before that.

Please tell us how long you think it takes for someone to study and become a skilled or professional cook. Yea, I know you said that you only read that, but try telling the rest of the world that even a 10 year old can cook a decent meal if they want to learn how too.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

I lived in Thailand from 84-97 and in that time got married, had a kid and than we decided, enough and wanted to sample the "good life"
went back, brought a house in Monterrey Ca with a view of the bay, new Subaru, wife got a job, Daughter in school, ( she was 3 1/2)
we lasted all of 14 months before se asia called me back
After living overseas for more than a decade, its very hard to return to your home country unless your forced to.

Its just things are to "normal" where you grew up.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Part of the problem with the food is they dont mind scamming people.

Many Cambodians sell food in restaurants they would not eat themselves.

When people cook for you at home, the food is normally good.

Hi Duncan, I think you can already see I don't know, and can't even guess, "how long you think it takes for someone to study and become a skilled or professional cook".

So, you live in Phuket now? Thailand had a different feel to me than Cambodia.

One reason I went back was ...well, there were several practical reasons that made it the right thing to do at this time.

Funny you should say that. Mrs Cargo keeps going on about that all the time. How the vegetables are not fresh, not cleaned properly and meat low quality. She's very fussy about where she eats out and prefers to go to the market and cook herself.

I like to eat out more and tend to go to places where I haven't had stomach problems. Then again, who knows what you're eating and where it comes from?

If Cambodians were to open a restaurant and just sell good food, they would have a very good business. They think they are clever when they scam people today. Smart business people would think about repeat customers, and build up the business.

There are plenty of good dishes available here, one problem is the variability of quality of venues, but sticking to the better class places helps solve that problem. Stuff cooked at home or when visiting friends never disappoints. Of course if Khmer food is not to your liking there are many top notch foreign restaurants in Phnom Penh.
