Lanmei Airlines Flight Turns Back to Phnom Penh as Safety Measure
Lanmei Airlines flight to Bangkok returns to Phnom Penh safely after difficulties
Voun Dara | Publication date 01 February 2019 | 10:26 ICT
A Lanmei Airlines flight to Bangkok with 200 passengers returned safely to Phnom Penh International Airport after experiencing technical problems shortly after take-off on Wednesday. No injuries were reported.
The pilots landed the plane safely after encountering a technical issue 30 minutes after take-off at around 9:50am.
“When the pilots realised something was wrong after taking off, they immediately landed. If they had decided to continue [to Bangkok], it would have been all right as well."
“But they returned for the sake of passenger safety,” Chea Aun, under-secretary of state and spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, told The Post on Thursday.
“The company arranged an evening flight for passengers for 5:30-6pm. We have never experienced such a problem before. It was just a technical problem,” said a representative of China’s Lanmei Airlines.
Aun said that small technical issues were commonplace around the world.
“Such safety measures [as returning to the airport] are normal. The company changed the flight for the passengers and there was no problem. There is nothing wrong with the engine. They have checked it and it works normally now,” he said.

30 minutes into the flight is about half way, what difference would it have made? wouldnt it have been more difficult and time consuming to pull a U'y and go back to PP?CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 9:09 am Lanmei Airlines flight to Bangkok returns to Phnom Penh safely after difficulties

I suspect, in some cases they like to do it where the maintenance/repairs are least expensive.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 1:42 pm 30 minutes into the flight is about half way, what difference would it have made? wouldnt it have been more difficult and time consuming to pull a U'y and go back to PP?

That’s more likely the case. If landing immediately was needed, then turn right and land in Siem Reap.(subject to route)explorer wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 1:56 pmI suspect, in some cases they like to do it where the maintenance/repairs are least expensive.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 1:42 pm 30 minutes into the flight is about half way, what difference would it have made? wouldnt it have been more difficult and time consuming to pull a U'y and go back to PP?
It maybe a flawed decision, but most likely return to base where the company spares/engineering etc are.
As was let slip in the article blurb, continuing on was an equally viable option.
Something wrong after takeoff, and 30 minutes after takeoff (likely at cruise altitude) are somewhat contradictory.

Or they could land immediately in the quiet PP airport where in the much busier Bangkok airport they may have had to wait before landing.explorer wrote:I suspect, in some cases they like to do it where the maintenance/repairs are least expensive.Jamie_Lambo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 02, 2019 1:42 pm 30 minutes into the flight is about half way, what difference would it have made? wouldnt it have been more difficult and time consuming to pull a U'y and go back to PP?
