Usable Khymer Language
Usable Khymer Language
Just posted this in the wrong section .
Will be travelling around Cambodia for 2 weeks and want to interact more with the people . I have no words in Khymer yet . Can anyone provide or point me to basic usable phrases words that can be easily used in the countryside , restaurants , shops , social situations , funny local words etc . I speak Thai and Vietnamese so any words that are the same in either of these languages would also be advantageous .

Just speak English
Re: Usable Khymer Language
Barang means French or Westerner in Cambodian, similar to Thai.
The numbers 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 are similar to Cantonese, which are similar but different to Thai. Ask a Cambodian for the pronunciation.

Re: Usable Khymer Language
The Khyber pass doesn't really have it's own Khyber language, if you're heading up that way, you'll need Urdu or Hindustani; Khmer would be absolutely useless.

Yes . I have the numbers down . You are right they are similar to Thai . Im guessing the in the Khyber pass they only speak Urdu or Afghan languages anyway on about talking Khymer not Khyber lol I could speak English but the average Cambodian in the countryside doesnt understand and I want to integrate with them a bit by showing off my khymer skills . Like ordering food , chatting up chicks etc . Guess I came to the wrong site .

traveled all over Cambodia by car
speak less than 10 words of khmer
smile and O-ku!n ( thank you)
worked fine
Lots of thai words used in Khmer but not always the same meaning
Thai numbers were "borrowed" from Khmer
