Chinese Navy Ships to Celebrate New Koh Rong Naval Outpost

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I think it’s a misconception that all locals have been displaced and lost their jobs - I think that latter does Cambodians a disservice to their resilience.

There’s still lots of accommodation for them although at the moment not as much but there’s more of them now, as I alluded to earlier.

They certainly mostly earn more now than the $120 the expats were paying them.

rogerrabbit: I haven't got any looks or feelings when I have went to Chinese run places. Most of the casinos, hotels and restaurants (at least the better ones) accept westerners as well. I think what is the biggest problem is the language barrier. Many old expats feel intimidate when they go to restaurant run by Chinese and their menu is only in Chinese and they get the feeling they are not welcome in there.
Yeah, good point. They are always happy to have an extra customer. :) Maybe some of that is 'self induced' by some expats..to put it crudely and simply coz...as the sole whitey there you stand out like dog's balls..

OTOH the chinese complain some PP riverside restaurant menus are not in chinese..yet, I gather the reverse happens for english in chinese restaurants in Snook..

I’ve seen Chinese in barang/Khmer places and they really struggle with the menu if it’s not in Chinese or doesn’t have pictures and to order.
It’s no wonder they go to their “own”.

As I said. There’s lots of hysteria about what has and hasn’t happened and most of it is hearsay and Chinese whispers (Lol).
I got booted out. It’s not nice but was inevitable. Just as one day I’ll go back when rents stabilise.

For wages, I highly suggest you check out the Chinese forums, they are constantly trying to figure out ways to pay less. This idea that people are raking in the big bucks is rediculous. Service staff are being hired at $120 or even less whe they can be. Chinese nationals are mostly lucky to be making $600 per for a foreman type position. The only ones making rake are the money launderers and the land owners. Many Chinese nationals are very unhappy with the current status quo, there is a large amount of random stabbings/robbings by young Khmer gangs that go unreported because Chinese are skeptical of police wanting to help them. There was over 30 stabbings in a 2 week period in December and only 2 got reported to police.

I’ve direct experience with both Chinese business owners (big and small) and locals is all sorts of jobs. Many locals are earning triple what they did before in service jobs (not tuk tuk or Motodops either). Granted their expenses are greater but they are better off.
There’s now more local accommodation coming online as it develops.

But again some people just see negativity in everything and just spout nonsense with no actual experience or evidence. Lol.

You absolutely can make $2500 a month driving a sand/fill truck. Just not in Sihanoukville. Or anywhere in Cambodia for that matter.
