Indonesia tsunami: 43 dead and 'many missing' after Anak Krakatoa erupts – latest updates
23 December 2018
Hello and welcome to our blog on the tsunami that has hit the west coast of Java in Indonesia.
Here is what we know so far:
The wave struck the area on the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra on Saturday, around 9.30pm local time.
The national disaster agency says 43 people have been killed and nearly 600 are injured.
A local disaster official said there were “many” people missing.
It is believed that a combination of underwater landslides triggered by an eruption of Anak Krakatoa volcano and high tides around the full moon caused the tsunami.
The disaster agency says it is still investigating the causes.
Emergency teams have been sent to the area although the agency said the main road to the region was blocked.
The wave hit villages and hotels along the coast – especially the areas of Pandenglang, South Lampung and Serang. The region is a popular getaway from the capital city, Jakarta, 180km away.
One witness, a Norwegian photographer, said he had to run to higher ground to escape the wave.
There is some TV dramatic footage of the tsunami crashing into a band while they perform on stage.

The total casualty of a tsunami triggered by the eruption of Krakatau Child volcano has increased to 168 people in coastal areas of Sunda Strait of western Indonesia, disaster agency official said here on Sunday.
The catastrophe killed at least 168 people, wounded at least 745 ones and collapsed a total of 430 houses and nine hotels, and caused damages to scores of ships, spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
"The figures are expected to rise as the current risk assessment has not reached all affected areas," he told a press conference.
Evacuation for the victims of the tsunami striking Pandeglang district, the worst hit area, in Banten province, Serang district of the province and Lampung Selatan district in Lampung district, is being undertaken by rescuers, said Sutopo.
A total of 624 injured people are being treated in Pandeglang district, he added.
Huge waves rattled residential areas and several tourist destinations along the coastal areas of Sunda Strait, including Pangdeglang, Pantai Tanjung Lesung, Sumur, Penimbang, Teluk Lada dan Carita.

Horrible year for Indonesian disasters.
Lion Air 189 dead.
Lombok earthquake 560 dead.
Sulawesi earthquake 2100 dead.
MV Sinar Bangun Sumatra ferry sunk 188 dead.
Not to mention many smaller earthquakes causing single figure deaths and the multiple floods/landslides.
