The circumstances of the fire outbreak are not yet clear, but it seems a drying machine may have over-heated. Workers on the ground said it took them some time to realize what was happening because of the noise of the machines.

At 4:30pm, police were still searching for 2-4 workers who were up the top of the mill at the time the fire was declared. The number of dead or injured workers has not yet been made public.

Two killed in rice factory blaze
A rice factory fire yesterday killed two workers and injured four others in Kampong Speu province’s Odong district.

Colonel Khim Samon, Odong district police chief, said yesterday that the fire started at about 2.30 pm at the Golden Rice factory in Ksem Ksan commune. He said police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

“It killed two people and four people were injured,” Col Samon said. “All the injured people were sent to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh.”
A doctor at the hospital’s emergency unit confirmed that the hospital received the four people injured in the fire.

“All of them were sent for surgery,” he said. “I cannot give details.”

According to a district police report, police officers used nine fire trucks, including two from the factory and two from neighbouring garment factories, to battle the blaze.

Factory fire claims third victim
December 21, 2018
A third person has died following the Golden Rice Factory fire in Kampong Speu province’s Odong district, which killed two people and injured four others on Wednesday.

Choek Borin, provincial labour department director, yesterday said that according to the factory, a worker died at about 10am yesterday after being sent to Vietnam for treatment.

“Three of the injured victims were sent to a hospital in Vietnam but one of them died upon arrival,” he said. “Another is still being treated in the emergency ward at Calmette Hospital.”

Mr Borin identified the victim who died yesterday as Kruy Sinuon and the other two being treated in Vietnam as Sun Sovannara, and Sou Teav. He identified the victim in Calmette Hospital as Dy Rach.

He said that after the fire on Wednesday, all four injured victims were sent to Calmette Hospital, but three were badly hurt and were sent to Vietnam for treatment.

Mr Borin added that according to police the fire was caused by a worker who was welding and sparked the blaze.
