In 1993, 25-year-old australian Martin Garnett is already earning good money at a car dealership in Sydney, but he's hungry for more. He is caught smuggling 4.7 kilos of heroin into Bangkok and is set to become Australia's longest serving prisoner overseas.

:o Excuse me if this is a stupid question - but why would an Australian smuggle heroin INTO Bangkok ? Does he have some comprehension issues or a disability ? ie. AFAIK Bangkok is awash with cheap heroin, and the sentences for drug trafficking are dire. Why would you do this ?

gong rate in the early 90's was about $20,000/

Don't think you need to be a smuggler to have a a ball-park idea of what a courier would get- if you were "around" then and knew the street price.

How so ? I know the price of a quarter in the UK but have no idea what a courier bringing in a few kilos would get . Seems that poster maybe had some involvement with the drug traffiking business perhaps .

In fact I spent a while in Chunking Mansion around 1994. And yes Id agree that there were plenty of dodgy guys around .
