if the airport is 51 km away from SR-town (in straight line) i can imagine how long it takes in daytime to get to the city-center. If they built a mono-rail it wil be in a blink of an eye. Shanghai-Pudong-airport is at similar diostance from town center and they have a monorail also, ot goes at 430 kmh, took it in 2018 and you are in city center in less then 10 minutes, only error i made, my hotel was about half the way to city center, and they dont stop any place between airport and citycenter.
For Kampuchea it will be ofcourse only for prestige: look what we can afford us !! ??
How far is new PP-airport from Daun Penh ??
Probably better investement there then in SR in my eyes !! ??

They built it 50km away from Siem Reap, so that's at least an hour away, and now they want a monorail to get into town (more debt).

What a waste of money.
Capacity is not the issue. Unesco requested the airport moval already 10 years ago as noise vibration from planes effect on the Angkor Wat temples. I pretty I have seen article also stating the Unesco hoped new airport to be at least 30km from the site.

The drive from new airport is pretty much exactly one hour currently. They are widening the roads now and should be hour in future too with more traffic.

Construction of the Angkor Siem Reap International Airport is now 90 percent complete as the construction firm is accelerating its work so that official launch can be held as planned in October.

The update was shared during an inspection visit by the Steering Committee for the Construction of Siem Reap Angkor International Airport led by H.E. Tekreth Samrach, Secretary of State at the Council of Ministers, to the construction site on Tuesday.

As of the end of March, the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport project has achieved 90 percent as planned and is ready for a flight trial in May toward its official launch on Oct. 16, 2023, the committee said.

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is located in Tayek commune, Sotr Nikum district, about 51 kilometres from Siem Reap provincial city and 40 kilometres from Angkor Wat Temple.

The construction of Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport began in March 2020 by AIAI. The US$880-million worth airport is 4E class which enables it to handle long-haul aircrafts.

Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport’s Operation to be Launched on Oct. 16
AKP Phnom Penh, July 17, 2023 --

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, the new international airport in Siem Reap cultural province, will be put into official use on Oct. 16, 2023, contributing to boosting the tourism sector, and thus the Cambodian economic growth.

The schedule was shared by H.E. Sin Chansereyvutha, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), during the visit of a delegation of Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA) to the airport on July 17.

On the occasion, the spokesperson also affirmed that air transport activity in Cambodia has restored by 50 percent compared to that in 2019, the pre-pandemic period.

Mr. LU Wei, Chairman of Angkor International Airport Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. (AIAI), said that the new airport will promote the aviation development, facilitate the visit to the great Angkor temples, attract more Chinese tourists to Cambodia, and boost tourism development.

Ms. Chhay Sivlin, President of CATA, expressed her pride with the new airport, saying that this is a good factor to support the mission to promote Cambodia as “A Stand Alone Destination” and the airport will be an important asset for the future of Cambodia’s tourism.

The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is located in Tayek commune, Sotr Nikum district, about 51 kilometres from Siem Reap provincial city and 40 kilometres from Angkor Wat Temple.

The construction of the airport began in Mar. 2020 and the US$880-million worth airport is a 4E class that can handle long-haul aircrafts.

AirAsia operations will relocate to new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport starting 16 October
By Asian Aviation Staff -

AirAsia announced it will relocate its operations to the new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI) effective 16 October 2023. Once operational, AirAsia will utilise 16 check-in counters at the terminal at Row C01-C16, which will make the check-in process faster and smoother.

The first AirAsia flight to land at the new airport is AirAsia Malaysia flight AK542 and AK540 from Kuala Lumpur, followed by Thai AirAsia flights FD610, FD614 and FD618. Guests on these flights will receive a notification before their scheduled departure date to inform them of the changes.

The SAI airport is located in Tayek commune, Soutr Nikom district, around 55 kilometres from the capital of Siem Reap province. The new airport will have convenient facilities to handle passenger and cargo traffic and provide an initial capacity of processing up to seven million passengers annually with planned expansions increasing that capacity to 20 million passengers annually by 2050. As for the passenger convenience, SAI Airport’s ground floor is accessible to various transportation options such as transfer buses, car rentals, and taxis.

The new airport is further away from the famous Angkor Wat temple complex and was designed to lessen the impact of aviation on the temples.

The new airport can receive larger aircraft from the United States and Europe, facilitating direct flights for international tourists visiting the Kingdom of Wonder, a press release by the Ministry of Information said.

Taxi fares to Siem Reap are going to be an issue. it’s a long way for Tuktuks so need cars. I doubt hotels will continue to offer a free pick up from the airport.
