why so much disrespect for those recently passing
Re: why so much disrespect for those recently passing
Go to a couple of bars on 172 and you will find said grandstanders and attention seekers. Nobodies perfect in this world, and diminishing others so you can feel better about yourself is a perfect way to tell people YOU are far from perfect!Cinnamoncat wrote: ↑Mon Nov 26, 2018 7:19 pm I am following this conversation with a fair bit of interest. I was really disenchanted with some of the comments on the poor guy with the swollen gut, but have seen similarly horrendous comments elsewhere--towards others dying, on drugs, running naked, making bad choices, being new (naive) to Cambodia, or being poor and working in the sex trade.
Back to the more recent issue: It's not just the underlying concern that someone's going to take the watch off your wrist and throw you on the curb to die, if you get so ill that you can't button your pants. It's that the vultures and watchers are going to mock you for it. Getting mocked in a public forum while you're at your vulnerable moment---a moment we'll all reach at some point--is pretty horrible to consider.
I think it's often the grandstanders and attention seekers who try to be the first to peck others' eyes out, the lonely new posters who haven't found friends or a way to fit in.
Also though--consider that the majority of your members are male. Add a bit of youth, and there we go. Hiding behind a moniker makes it worse.

It's pretty simple really, focus specific mod attention on the death threads and issue a standard 1 week ban for anyone posting poor taste or disrespectful comments, 3 strikes and you're out permanently. It should make those offenders reevaluate their comments and if they don't they'll be gone and hopefully not let back in with a new sock. It's the worst aspect of the forum and why you need to direct action when you're clearly losing contributors or you'll slowly but surely go the way of the other forum.
What has always annoyed me about the comments on death threads is when it is a long termer that is well known to posters it is normally made very clear that " we all knew him so no shit comments will be tolerated, respect please ", yet when it is a tourist or anonymous resident to the board it's open season. Massive double standard that needs to addressed, it really isn't that difficult mods.
All the shit talk, bickering, periodic over zealous debates are fine amongst the living, and I would say that since That Moron/Vladimir isn't around that side of things has improved noticeably. The modding still seems at the right level in that respect in my opinion.

I've never claimed perfection, but you won't find me mocking dying people, sir.

You know them or you're just making a wild guess?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Death is merely the dissolution of a temporarily existing organism.
Any additional comment would be superfluous.

Re: why so much disrespect for those recently passing
Many thanks PhuketRichard for creating this thread. I've been following/reading CEO for a long time, but only recently started posting on here. Part of that is because I work and I'm somewhat time-limited, but also I tread with extreme care because it does appear quite easy to get stick for being a newbie, or for innocent/naive comments etc. The thread about the gentleman who's really sick and this stuff about the watch though, as many have said in this thread, is pretty fucking disgusting. I can only imagine if his family read that thread that they'll be feeling extremely hurt by the utter tactlessness shown by a very small minority of members of this forum.
Having said all that, I should add that I really value CEO because it does bring the news to us foreigners living here in the Kingdom far better than any other website dedicated to Cambodia, in English. The humour is often genius-level too, and it's one of the few websites I read where I find myself actually laughing out loud. It's often a fine line between funny, dark humour and being offensive though, and I know in the real world and online I cross that line sometimes. So I don't envy the mods on here an often tricky job, and you're all volunteers, so it's much appreciated, and I certainly wouldn't expect you all to get it right 100% of the time. But yeah, a little toughening up on some of the more blatantly offensive-for-offensive's-sake board members would be appreciated by me (and I assume others).
Completely unrelated, but if any of you guys and ladies on here happen to see me around town, please do come and say hello - I drop into Mini Banana, The Garage, and Sundance on Friday and Saturday nights quite often, and I go to the pub quiz at Botanico on Tuesday evenings.
Cheers,
Daniel

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
