About seven boats sank on Wednesday while racing on the Tonle Sap river in front of the Royal Palace to celebrate the three-day Water Festival, but no rowers were injured, an official said.

National Police spokesman Lieutenant General Chhay Kim Khoeun said Thursday that during boats sinking, security forces rescued all boat racers and no one drowned,

“Our security forces are continuing to monitor all racing boats today and tomorrow to avoid accidents,” Lt Gen Kim Khoeun said.

Bou Chum Serey, vice chairman of the boat-racing technical committee, said that 295 boats with 19,017 oarsmen took part in the Water Festival this year, compared to last year’s 265 boats with 18,000 rowers.
“I do not know how many boats sank yesterday because I was busy with matching the boats,” Mr Chum Serey said.
