Man charged with hacking guard
Battambang Provincial Court yesterday charged a man who allegedly hacked a village security guard with an axe, causing serious injuries, during a dispute at a wedding ceremony in Banan district on Saturday.

Major General Cheth Vanny, provincial general crimes department chief, identified the accused as Chhoeuth Chhuoy, 17, a farmer living in Bay Damram commune.

He noted that the attack took place at about 10.30pm on Saturday during a wedding ceremony in the commune’s Kampong Cheng village.

Maj Gen Vanny said that the accused is charged with intentional acts of violence after he allegedly hacked security guard Vuth Savoeun, 36, three times with an axe.

Mr Chhuoy faces up to five years in jail if convicted and is now in prison pending trial.

Major Kong Sarath, district deputy police chief, said that on the night of the violence, the accused and about six friends attended the wedding dance in the commune.
He noted that during the dance, Mr Chhuoy stepped on the feet of other dancers, sparking an argument with a group of four men.

Maj Sarath said Mr Savoeun intervened and expelled the accused from the wedding after scolding him and threatening to beat him.

He said Mr Chhuoy went home to get an axe and returned to confront the victim.
