Thai Junta and Thaksin-Backed Populists Face Off Before 2019 Poll

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

The candidacy of a close member of the royal family is unprecedented in Thailand since the era of absolute monarchy ended 86 years ago. Analysts said the move would have been backed by the new king, whose coronation takes place on May 4-6.
"This is historical," Paul Chambers, politics expert at Thailand's Naresuan University, told CNN. "I think that it's part of a plan by the current sovereign to increase his personal power across the country."
"For him to place his own sister in a position like this ... She's not doing it by herself. This would signify that royalty is increasingly intervening in Thai politics today."
Yes sure this could be a possibility but WHY with Thaksin's party? Hmmmmmm

Yeah, why? There where rumors that Thaksin and the then crown prince where close and that Thaksin
gave or lent him a lot of money. Maybe a "pay back"?

Was sitting in an Aussie bar/restaurant in Bangkok this afternoon when BBC chimed in with a report by Jonathan Head on the princess candidate news. Within seconds, the screen went blank and snowy, with the message Programming will return shortly. Sure enough, with the BBC report on Thailand over, programming did return on other topics. You just got to laugh at Thailand antics.

more from the cnn article;
The political culture of Thailand finds that royalty cannot be challenged and for anyone to politically challenge this royalty, well that's simply not acceptable through the political culture," Chambers said. "I doubt any other candidate would dare run against her."
A draconian lese majeste law, backed up by prison terms, could also mean Ubolratana remains unchallenged.

People are hoping that this princess will be a light at the end of Thailand's dark tunnel of dictatorial authoritarianism. That she'll be the means by which democratic forces can compel the junta to cede power and go back to the barracks," Chambers said.
Thai Raksa Chart said in a statement that Ubolratana "thinks it is about time to volunteer to perform the duty as Prime Minister to ... bring development to the country and return the well-being to the people by applying technology, to improve economics and society in order to modernize Thailand at international level, and moreover to create reconciliation among Thai people."
ONE BIG PROBLEM
In March, Thais will vote for the 500-seat lower house of parliament. But the 250-member upper house, or Senate, will be chosen entirely by the military.

Things are going to get very interesting over here :beer3:
Both were abolished in 2014.

Rumors LOL: fact, Mr T bailed out the princes plane in Germany from massive overdue landing fees when his dad cut him off
Mr T has backed him for ages, knowing he would be K when his dad died.

its simple
the current K is in hocks to Mr T
Mr T Knows he cant allow anyone else in his family to run, as the public will see right thru that, SO gets the K older sister to run under his party (knowing every thai will support the monarchy, ( be her legally part of it or not ) and vote her in)
she wins and another puppet is in place.
grants Mr T amnesty
the army mounts another coup

Ahhh Thailand

From the above aisa times article
Diplomats said earlier that Ubolratana was expected to have her full royal titles restored at or after Vajiralongkorn’s official coronation ceremony to be held between May 4 and 6, the first the kingdom has held since Bhumibol was crowned in 1950. It’s unclear if she could still seek public office if her full royal titles are restored, analysts say.

@phuketrichard
If she become PM of Thailand and the army disagree with her, like they did with Thaksin and his sister, do you think the army would commit a coup against here ?
I have my doubts about that, I think the king would be "not amused", because I believe the king gave her his blessing to candidate.
