Luxury Cruising on the Mekong Delta

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Honeymooning, a wedding anniversary, or a trip with friends who want to do something "special" in South East Asia ? This travel blurb on a very upmarket Mekong Delta cruise sounds tempting. (And also very expensive, but hey, what if you win the lotto ? )
This cruise left from Phnom Penh.

More on Cambodia-Vietnam river cruises:

Just Back From Avalon Waterways: A River Cruise in Vietnam and Cambodia
November 14, 2018
"Vietnam and Cambodia -- why would you ever want to travel to those war-torn countries?" That's the reaction we received from friends before we went on a river cruise from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Siem Reap, onboard Avalon Waterways' newest ship, Avalon Saigon.

We don't blame them for the response. The Vietnam War and genocide in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime didn't happen that long ago. Many veterans and survivors of these devastating events are still alive today, and those who recall following news reports about them have abominable images burned into their memories.

The chance to hear the stories and see the countries as they are today was part of what makes this cruise so intriguing. Southeast Asia's Lower Mekong River is not a new itinerary; besides Avalon Waterways, most major river cruise lines, including Viking, Uniworld, AmaWaterways, Scenic, CroisEurope, Pandaw and coming in 2019, Emerald Waterways, sail on it. After a week onboard Avalon Saigon, with extended land tours in Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap, we understand why this area of the world draws you in...

$1300 a night?
I don't think I've spent quite that much p.p. on even the finest or most debauched nights out.
In SEA.

More on Mekong river cruises:

Why the best way to absorb the culture of Vietnam and Cambodia is cruising this river
Many a rewarding experience is tucked away along the Mekong River
Jackie Holland
6 December 2018 • 11:34 AM

Vietnam and Cambodia offer a colourful culture, poignant history and verdant landscapes. These countries are ideally suited to travelling by water as many of the most rewarding experiences are tucked away in the countryside through which the Mekong River passes.

With most leading cruise operators, all excursions are included in the price of your trip. Not only do these include visiting popular sights such as the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat and the Cu Chi network of wartime tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) but you’ll also have the chance to visit homes, schools, markets, monasteries and tiny villages.

This immersive approach enables you to see how ordinary people go about their daily lives, eat the food they do and experience less-seen landmarks and rituals. It adds a compelling dimension to your holiday without the hassle of having to make any complicated plans yourself.

Mix with the locals
You’ll get a glimpse of everyday life on the riverbank from the deck of your modern ship as you drift serenely along the Mekong. Rickety wooden houses on stilts lean haphazardly against each other. Children wave excitedly and shout “hello”; their fathers are fishing and tinkering with boat engines and their mothers sell rice, fruit and flowers in the floating markets.

Ashore, you’ll be taken off the beaten track to visit villages, where smiling people offer a warm welcome. You can find out how craftspeople work with silk, copper and silver, and learn how to make rice paper. You’ll get a taste of rural Mekong life on a rickshaw ride through village streets and on a cart pulled by an ox through paddy fields. There’s also the chance to be showered by lotus petals in a blessing by Buddhist monks at their monastery in Oudong, the former royal capital of Cambodia.

Journalist gets free tour including first class air travel, writes glowing article on return. Rinse and repeat with many similar tours all around the world. Newspaper does not see the need to tag the glowing bs as "advertorial" or "sponsored".

Has anyone done this and would recommend? Hopefully a different company that is more reasonable.

Have friends coming soon that would fancy it but the companies listed here seem very expensive

I know someone who did the tour with Explore. He seemed happy with it. Still ridiculously expensive but if you are a tourist comparing it with Western prices for something similar, it can seem reasonable.

Another. less expensive, Mekong cruise option here.

DELTA BELTER Sail the Mekong River through the heart of South East Asia to experience all Vietnam and Cambodia have to offer
Stop off to visit remote villages, beautiful temples and even floating markets

FOR the best fish and chips in Vietnam and Cambodia, you do not need to look further than the mighty Mekong River.

The waterway is a floating supermarket, with boats packed full of everything from potatoes and perch to clothes and candy.

And it’s try before you buy. After opening up at 5am, vendors hand out samples hanging on bamboo poles to buyers pulled up beside them.

The goods are then taken off to villages and towns to be sold in markets together with less appetising food, such as frogs, eels and skinned rats.

Fortunately, those “delicacies” weren’t on my menu as I sailed along the Mekong — just the delicious fresh fish, fruit and veg prepared by a cruise ship chef.

I joined AmaWaterways’ Charms of the Mekong just outside Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, in the middle of a three-week trip living out of a suitcase.
Seven-night Charms of the Mekong cruise, including meals, most drinks, excursions and wifi is from £1,378 per person. See amawaterways.co.uk.

Discounts on river cruises
December 4, 2019
HO CHI MINH CITY, 4 December 2019: River cruises on the lower Mekong River sporting a 20% discount are up for grabs for sailings in early 2020.

Heritage Line, a leading river cruise operator in the Mekong region based in Vietnam, offers the discount on a seven-day voyage linking Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s commercial hub, and Siem Reap, the gateway to the iconic World Heritage temples of Angkor in Cambodia.

Even though the “The Lost Civilization” itinerary ranks as one of Southeast Asia’s most memorable river journeys, Mekong river cruises can be pricey especially if you compare them with popular sea cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong.

The 20% Heritage discount applies on selected sailings on two boats; Jayavarman and Jahn. The discounted rates are USD1,908 on the Jayavarman and USD2,168 on the Jahn.

There are around seven popular cruises of the lower Mekong River; a mix of shorter three-day cruises sailing the delta in Vietnam with stops in Cai Be, Can Tho and Chau (USD250 to USD350) and the longer seven or eight-night trips from a port south of Ho Chin Minh City to Phom Penh in Cambodia with prices starting at around USD1,700.

On the popular Bestpricevn.com, a seven-night cruise on RV Mekong Prestige II costs USD1,725. Avia Expedition is the most expensive at USD9,450.

Heritage competes for business head-on with Pandaw Cruises that sells an eight-night trip from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh for USD2,545.

5-6 years ago my Oz tax person (easy job) did a Ho Chi Minh - Siem Reap trip in one of those live-cattle export looking ships.
It blew her mind even tho' she is well travelled and sensible headed.
I think even i would enjoy that trip. You don't get that height on a kayak or small wooden boat, and the surroundings are fab.

Not sure how much it cost, but unless the rest of her client group is better than me, it couldn't have been too much.

(PS, this is a good time to slip in my regular little plug for always carrying a good compact pair of binoculars.
Get some!! - all you travellers.)
