Việt Nam aiming to top group against Cambodia
Update: November, 23/2018 - 22:56

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam coach Park Hang-seo is determined to top Group A with a win against Cambodia on Saturday at the ASEAN Football Championship.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday in Hà Nội, the South Korean coach said through an interpreter: "Việt Nam have not secured a place in the semi-finals yet so the next match (against Cambodia) is very important. To top the group we’ll have to play well and dominate them all over the field."

Park said he had his players to give 100 per cent over the 90 minutes despite the fact they had the advantage of playing at home.

"The Cambodians attack well from the midfield. My players will have to play well and stand up for themselves in midfield," said Park, who was not satisfied with his team’s performances in previous matches against weak opposition.

Park also praised Cambodia coach Keisuke Honda, a Japanese legend who only took charge of the team recently.

"He is one of Asia’s great footballers. I know him very well in person. He has balanced Cambodian football since he started his job there," Park said.

Honda will not be present at the game due to club commitments in Australia.

A possibly pivotal Group A match is set to kick-off as Vietnam hosts Cambodia in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018.

Despite Cambodia being already eliminated and out of contention for a semifinals slot, an inspired performance that can topple Vietnam could put the hosts’ chances to proceed to the semifinals in jeopardy.

An interesting clash is sure to be expected tonight.

Zaquan Adha double powers Malaysia to Suzuki Cup semifinals alongside favourites Vietnam
Reuters9:59 AM

Malaysia booked their place in the semifinals of the Suzuki Cup on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Myanmar that ensured they advance to the tournament's last four alongside favourites Vietnam.

Vietnam finished top of group A thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over already-eliminated Cambodia while a brace from Zaquan Adha following Nohshahrul Idlan Talaha's opener earned the Malaysians second place as a result of an impressive performance against Myanmar.

The Vietnamese secured top spot with a routine win over Cambodia, with goals coming from Nguyen Tien Linh, Nguyen Quang Hai and Phan Van Duc.
Tien Linh gave Vietnam the lead with a 39th-minute header and, two minutes later, Park Hang-seo's side were two ahead thanks to Quang Hai's side-foot finish.
Van Duc put the result beyond any doubt just after the hour with a clinical shot on the turn from just outside the area.

Wild celebrations in Hanoi as Vietnam win AFF Cup

HANOI (Reuters) – Football fever gripped Vietnam again on Saturday night as thousands of fans flocked to the streets of the capital Hanoi to celebrate their country’s victory over Malaysia in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship final.

Nguyen Anh Duc’s sixth minute volley secured a first regional title since 2008 for Vietnam and after the final whistle the streets around the My Dinh Stadium were soon teeming with flag-waving fans.

The supporters lit flares, waved national flags, blew vuvuzelas and honked car horns in a party atmosphere, a rare sight in the southeast Asian country but one seen three times this year after Vietnamese football success.

Similar celebrations occurred when Vietnam reached the final of the under-23 Asian Cup in January and again when they reached the semi-finals of the Asian Games tournament in August.

All three teams were coached by Park Hang-seo and his contribution was recognised by a number of South Korean flags carried by the revellers.

“It is truly wonderful,” Hanoi resident Vu Tong Tien told Reuters.

“We have so much to thank Mr Park Hang-seo for. Thank you Mr Park for bringing us this festive atmosphere and a success that the whole nation have been waiting for. Really, thank you, Mr Park Hang Seo.”

The feeling of affection is clearly mutual for the man some Vietnamese have dubbed the “wizard”.

“We got a lot of love from the Vietnamese people,” Park said in the post-match press conference.
