Is this the museum with all the wax figures, culminating in the ones or the UN stating that the foreigners have brought AIDS to Cambodia? Or is it the really cool other one with the room full of small budda statues.

Bad joke. How can you tell a good girl from a not good one? Take her to a real museum. One without a bar. And see how long the trip takes.

Restored Sandstone Buddha Foot Statue and Six Wooden Buddha Statues on Display at Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum
AKP Phnom Penh, July 08, 2022 --
Image
The Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum is exhibiting six ancient wooden Buddha statues and one sandstone Buddha Foot statue to show the public after experts have restored those artifacts, said the APSARA National Authority in a news release on July 7.

According to the same source, those Buddha statues were taken by conservationists from the Angkor Wat's Preah Poan gallery to be preserved, repaired, and maintained for a long time at the Angkor Conservation.

Acting Director of the Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, Mr. Pen Chamrong, said that those Buddha statues were kept and restored by the Angkor Conservation's experts. Later, the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts and President of the Board of Directors of APSARA National Authority, H.E. Dr. PHOEURNG Sackona, visited the Angkor Conservation and found that the six wooden Buddha statues and Buddha Foot statue had been restored. She advised to take those Khmer artifacts to exhibit to the public.

Mr. Pen Chamrong said that following the recommendation of the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, the Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum cooperated with the Angkor Conservation to organise an exhibition of the six Buddha statues and one sandstone Buddha Foot statue from May 2022 until now. This is the first time the Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum has received a statue from Angkor Conservation to exhibit at the museum.

Mr. Kun Phally, a technical staff and guide at the Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum said that the six wooden statues were built in the post-Angkorian period between the 14th and 18th centuries, resembling the Bayon style. Separately, the sandstone Buddha Foot statue is 13 cm high, 210 cm by 115 cm. Through photographs of old documents from 1906, these statues can be seen mixed with other statues, including the Buddha Foot statue at the Angkor Wat's Preah Poan gallery.

He added that the Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum is the first museum of archeology and Buddhism collection in Siem Reap, a collection of knowledge on the history, art history, and changes of the Khmer religion in the past.

Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum in Siem Reap province has been displaying the right Buddha Footprint statue for the public who wishes to research, study, and understand important information about religion, art, and history with events that took place more than 600-700 years ago in the Angkor area.

The right Buddha Footprint statue has been exhibiting at the museum, located in Boeung Don Pa village, Sangkat Slor Kram, Siem Reap provincial city, for almost a year, since May 2022, according to the APSARA National Authority.

Mr. Kun Phally, head of the exhibition team and guide at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, said that the ancient sandstone Buddha Footprint was carved between the 14th and 16th centuries AD. It weighs about three tonnes and is 2.10 metres long, 1.15 metres wide, and 31 centimetres high.
He added that the Buddha Footprint statue had been painted in black, red, and gold.

Studies show that in the past, the Buddha Footprint statue was considered by the Cambodian people an important object of worship for Theravada Buddhism and was kept at Angkor Wat in Thousand Buddha Gallary from the 14th century until 1985.
Later, the sandstone Buddha Footprint was taken to be preserved and restored by the Angkor Conservation Team. Then, H.E. Dr. PHOEURNG Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, and President of the Board of APSARA National Authority visited the Angkor Conservation and seeing that the Buddha Footprint statue had already been repaired, she instructed the conservation team to bring this object to display for the public to learn about Khmer art, especially the post-Angkorian Buddha statues.

Mr. Kun Phally said that in the centre of the Buddha Footprint statue, there are 108 different carvings, considered to be happiness.

The Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum in Siem Reap province is exhibiting a Large Pillar of Buddhism in Bayon style, probably created during the late 12th century AD, for the public, students, and researchers to see and study, said the APSARA National Authority (ANA)’s news release this morning.

The guide of the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, Mr. Voeun Vibol Sokhom, said that the sandstone pillar of Buddhism found in an excavation was named "Thousand Buddhas", a rare artifact of Khmer art.

Mr. Vibol Sokhom explained that the special feature of this sandstone pillar is that there are 1008 small Buddha images carved on its four sides, which represent the happiness of the universe.

He added that two types of religious sculptures have been found in Cambodia: the first was the Large Pillar of Buddhism on display at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum in Siem Reap, and the other was a Brahminism with the images of Vishnu currently on display at the National Museum in Phnom Penh.

According to ANA, the pillar is rectangular, 122 cm high, 58 cm wide, 45 cm thick, and weighs more than a half-tonne. On its four sides, there are 1,008 small meditation Buddha statues. At the top and bottom, there are some damages, with the surface of the stone having cracks and there are Naga head carvings on the top of the four corners.

National and international tourists are welcome to learn more about the stone pillars, as well as many other Buddhist sculptures on display at the Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum.
