Since the last time, (happened 3 times on that street), i've stopped going there.

Still drink and party, but have not had a recurrence of the "172 street effect".

My hunch is the drinks got spiked. Might have been an easy mark... solo-drinker and always on the pool table leaving my drinks unattended.

Things expats in Cambodia say that aren't really true:

"I'm ex-special forces"
"I teach at an international school."
"My friend's innocent, he was framed by NGOs."
"My drink was spiked"
"I could have afforded to stay in Thailand if I had wanted to."
"My girlfriend was never a bargirl"
"My girlfriend was a bargirl but she's different."
"I'll pay my bar tab next month when I get a big inheritance from back home."

What about those anticipating student loans, or lawsuit settlements? Not everyones a bum. Many poor people are honest, and few rich people humble.

Yeah thats probably true, but more often my ears screech at the frequency of those waiting for a "cash sum" after recently selling their bar, or house back home

Yeah, I just used "inheritance," but it can be any claim to pending imminent cash infusion from back home.

Travellers pass thru Phnom Penh. It also is home to both expats and beer guzzling pensioners or wasters.

172 is considered a cheaper street with mostly crappy budget accommodation and is where long term people hang out mostly drinking beer and chatting.
